I'm curious. Did you go to hers because you thought you'd hate yours even more? You know, lesser of two evils kinda thing...
|
Her family still lives in the town where she went to high school. My family moved to KS to become wheat farmers. Thus, hers was a more natural choice. I was sure I'd enjoy mine, but if you're going to drive 11 hours you might as well get in a weekend of family time rather than stay in a hotel for one 3 hour dinner party. I'm a jerk for this, but it is amusing to see how all the beautiful shallow popular people got crappy jobs and mostly aren't beautiful. The ones who are are semi-miserable. The normal/geeky people went to college, have careers, and have lives that you would want. I hear that the 20th and 30th reunions are much less about proving social status. At some point, you're just checking who is still alive.

Re: August Low-Content Thread
I went to my 10-year. It was okay -- I did reconnect with the girl I had a huge crush on. She was married and looking even hotter; I told her I had a big crush on her, she told me I was too much of a pussy to ask her out in high school. I agreed with her, then told her if she ever got divorced to look me up. She laughed, I left. Cut to two years later, I get an email from her saying she's coming to visit L.A. and "by the way I got divorced." Long story short, we hooked up and I had basically a long 12-year lead up to finally scoring with the Hot Chick At School.
Everyone else at the reunion was as you'd expect -- popular girls were now fat and defeated, jocks were balding and working as mechanics or cell phone salesmen, and all the nerds/outcasts were in NY or LA getting all the attention. I have no desire to go to any more of my reunions.

Re: August Low-Content Thread
You didn't reconnect with any long lost friends and find it cool that they were doing well? No fascinating stories?

Made the 20th, missed the 30th. I had mixed feelings about the 20th 'cause the one Prom Queen I still woulda done was happily married to one of my old pals and the rest of the lookers wore dresses that compared favorably with a decent blackjack hand- size wise.
I also found it depressing to learn who had died, and even more depressing to learn how. 40th comes up next year and I hope they enjoy themselves.
I'm considering sending flowers.

I didn't like them when I was in high school. What makes you think I would like any of them now?

Nope. My three closest friends were good enough buddies that we stay in touch via email/phone pretty consistently, and don't need a reunion to do so. One guy I went to his wedding, the other two I've either visited or they visited me.

You didn't like anybody? Or you already keep in touch with the people you liked?
I relate to the latter. Facebook has made reuinions obsolete IMO - the last time I went to my home town I set up a mini-reunion and we had a blast. A++ would reunite again but I don't really need to see a bunch of random people whose parents had unprotected sex the same year as mine. Also, I don't give a **** if the jocks are fat or unemployed. Or banging supermodels for that matter.
Supermodels need love too.

What do you guys think about going to your high school reunion? I have a major one coming up and am on the fence.
Most of the people I was friends with in high school are still my friends (through facebook, e-mail, etc.). I think the trepidation has to do a bit with sometimes memories of things that happened in the past are better than the reality you face in person. I.e., you realize people that you thought were cool are actually douchebags. And the standard feelings of jealousy of people who were more successful, etc.
Maybe I need to re-watch Grosse Pointe Blank to get in the right mindset.

I'll go as long as I have a lot of money and my life is still awesome. The few people I care about catching up with I either txt/hang out with now and then or at least talk with them on facebook. I'm shallow enough to say that my main motivation by far for going would be to show up the jerkoffs who thought they were hot **** cuz they could throw a football and their parents made 300k/year. Oops, turns out you sucked at sports relative to someone who is actually mildly talented. Oops, turns out 300k isn't a lot in the real world and it turns out that whatever your parents did couldn't stand up to the GWB-Obama economic double whammy. Oops, turns out that just cuz they made 300k a year at one point in time doesn't mean you're entitled to anything, it turns out hard work pays off, who would've guessed?! No thanks, I don't want fries with that, go **** yourself. I'm already friends with some of these ppl on facebook too, but I imagine that seeing their terribly boring low class lives on a computer screen isn't nearly as satisfying as seeing the shell of a human they've become in real life. #mightbealittlebitter

When you're 50, I'm guessing your feelings may be different than when you're 25 or 30. Let you know when I get there

It is a funny that I agree with you to some extent but I have never gone to any of mine. I don't think it will feel good or be fun to show up and basically confirm that the pathetic losers did what they were projected to do and I did what I was projected to do. Like you said, hard work pays off. I just honestly don't think there will be any way for me not to come off with an "I told you so" attitude even though the real reason I want to go has nothing to do with showing off. I would like to see the "sleeper" types. By this I mean the girls who I thought were underrated and the quiet and smart kids who are likely have done something interesting with their lives.
I agree that Facebook has changed a lot of this but also made me realize that it is almost impossible to be over 40 and not fat.
