I missed the catering deadline, so pregame happy hour on the company it is. Hopefully nobody quits over the slight

I think jdr pretty much nailed my thoughts. All the folks that work for me make good dough, but we're in a market where they could have a job tomorrow with 10,000 other companies that do basically the same thing we do. In part because it's my nature, but also for employee retention, I try to do things like this often even though it's literally money out of my pocket to do so.

Fwiw, I also gave people the choice of how they wanted to have money re-invested in the company....more to bonus pool or company-paid experiences. They all chose the later.

@boc

1) hows that learning to program effort going buddy? You could be in the box this time next year....
2) to see the caps absolutely destroy the shtbag flyers.

The last company I worked for did an event at a Diamondbacks game. We had our own bar and buffet and a section of seating to watch the game from. Our families were welcome also. Attendance was voluntary but almost everyone showed up unless they had some other commitment. I thought it was pretty awesome.

Also, if you don't get along with the people you work with, you are working at the wrong company.

In any organization above a certain size, fit isn't that easily to figure out. Sure, maybe your company makes hemp flip flops and as a startup you have Friday night drum circles, but sooner or later when you make enough money the CFO you hire will wear a suit and have a framed picture of Reagan on his wall. If he's a fit, it can mean he shows up to Friday night drum circle and shares a nice bottle of wine from his cellar, not that he puts on a Rastacap and drums.

Alright, which one of you is hiring? My qualifications include graciously accepting invitations to sporting events in a suite and eating hotdogs at baseball games.

Any law document review experience? I make the office suffer through Padre games with the occasional trip to watch the Ducks and the LA teams.

Pretty sure that is a secondary reason.

One of the hats the CEO gave me at my new job is recruiting. We spend $2,000 a month just advertising job postings. Each new hire costs us many thousands in recruiter fees. Every hire we don't make and every employee we lose costs us many thousands a month in lost revenues.

One of our most recent get togethers was an "escape the room" game. Just yesterday a couple employees raved about how much fun it was. If you don't think spending a few thousand to help make employees happier and build an esprit de corp among them isn't worthwhile, the you have no clue how to run a business.

Oh. Yea.

OK Pete, I have to admit that picture is funny. Just remember not everyone's ideas of fun are the same though. I thought most people disliked those kinds of work-related social events, but I guess I was mistaken.

There's definitely a category of work social events that's terrible, but it's like Saturday afternoon picnic where you bring your own food and also there's no alcohol.

Box seats at a game would be awesome for like 90% of employees

If I didn't like the majority of the people I worked with, the only debate would be on giving 2 weeks notice vs. trying to come to an arrangement to leave that very day.

If I lived closer, I'd be bugging you for a job.

Life is what you make of it. Work-related social events aren't something I'd choose to do, but when I have to do them, I make the most of it. Wine and cheese? I can either be grumpycat and let everyone know I'm grumpycat, or I can try to have fun (and maybe read the leo doc thread to see what I should ask about wines). Baseball game? Show up late, eat a little, leave early. Take some "leftovers" in a box and go find a homeless person to give it to, if you feel guilty about having seen more games from luxury boxes than the stands.

I can't believe we've gone 3 pages already and no one has pointed out that he was talking about vegans, not vegetarians. Game, set, match.

Vegans don't eat beets?

As far as I know, vegans don't eat anything except moral superiority.

Was the moral superiority raised free range?

There's a difference?

Oh yea, the difference is I don't care.

I ate at a vegan restaurant once. It didn't really work out.

That's as ridiculous as evangelical veganism.

is there some part of the united states where its common for an atheist to actually talk about it?

@rob. Somehow nobody quit...yet.

I'd imagine it's talked about far more frequently almost poker players, with the belief being most good poker players are extremely logical and its logically impossible to believe in God. I've been told Verbatum it's crazy you are good at poker given your views on more than one occasion.

Also I just read the joke on reedit one day and it made me laugh

sounds like this has more to do with you talking about religion than atheists talking about atheism

Jon may have just revealed the biggest secret to winning. Finding Jesus apparently makes you good at poker.
