I'm kind of in the same spot, but I haven't played for a few years. Anyone got some good advice on best refresher material. I was just going to re-read the Stoxtrader book, but any other suggestions are welcome.

The quintessential hand when you lose 17 racks straight without the faintest tick of an upswing:

UTG limps. Tricky LAG pro completes SB, I check J4o in BB. Flop J43r. Pro leads, I raise, UTG folds, dealer leaves our bets in front. Turn 7s, he calls. River 2s, he check-raises. I call, and he turns over 84s for backdoor spades. I have not made any motion or shown my cards, and as I look at board again the dealer reaches over to my bets and slides them to SB.

I already knew my opponents were cheating me but this is clear proof the dealers are in on it.

He always beats me too for what it is worth. I used to always beat him but it changed maybe 6 months ago. Still, he seems like a nice guy. There are definitely worse people to lose to.

17 racks does seem like quite a lot to lose in one downswing.

Assuming it is all in 20/40 (which it doesn't matter if it is or isn't, it's all at 4 chip 8 chip I'm assuming).

17 racks = $8500 = 212 bets

Bad yes, but not unheard of. Some of us have lost 100+ bets in a session.

I think it matters a lot. I would expect 200 big bet down swings are much more frequent as you increase stakes because I'd expect win rates (in terms of big bets) to be smaller and variance to be higher.

It's all red chips, and all in four days, about 36 hours. The worst part about it was that I never had a single upswing better than one rack, and always lost it by end of sessions. It seemed like I couldn't win a hand for long periods of time. I played a little OE with the Holdem but never won there either, here are the sessions.

It was just unrelenting every time i sat down, in almost all good to great games. I'd lose my day session and come back to lose my night sessions. Made me question my understanding of holdem and OE. I've had much bigger downswings but they weren't so sudden, and so complete. It's one thing to lose for a while when you only book wins one out of three sessions, to get shut out every time you walk in the door is just confidence shattering.

The silly part is I'm out of work and while looking for jobs I decided I'd just play a little poker to help make ends meet, and boom, I'm $8k behind.

The good news is I bottomed out at -18 racks midway through todays session and rebounded to book a win for $600. Lets see how the night session goes.

Yeah that's definitely a brutal stretch. I get those kind of days somewhat frequently (had 2 this weekend) but I don't think I've ever done that poorly over a 4 day stretch.

I didn't think the game was that good when I played with you a few days ago. 7 seat was horrible maniac but you had worst seat being on his right and 1 seat was terrible loose passive but the rest of the table was either tight or solidish. Overall not a terrible game but if definitely say it was a below average 20-40 game which is why I switched to oe. Of course that game quickly became pretty terrible for a 20-40 oe so the joke's on me I guess.
