Speaking of going between poker and the world of straight jobs, I am feeling more and more burned out by poker and thinking about applying for work. Wondering what I should put on my resume about poker; I feel I have seen this discussed on 2+2 previously, but can't remember where, and the search tool isn't really helping. If anyone knows where that would be discussed, or has experience doing it yourself, please let me know.

Taking up acting/comedy, so less time to troll you all, well most of you all, well if I trolled you, you probably deserved it anyway.

This question always gets the stupidest advise .... professionall equity trader and other equally stupid advise (that often borders on outright fraud).

I'm sure this is the wrong approach by I would just say I was self employed as a professional poker player, and try to explain that it was simply to profitable to work a job rather than play poker. I'd even offer to let them look over my tax returns over the past years to try and show that it's not to different than somebody else running their own business and hope they can st least somewhat understand that I took a professional approach to it and merely took advantage of prime market opportunities.

Sadly, I feel like I could easily convince someone why they should hire me, but would likely be unable to get that chance given the would be glaring holes in my resume

I am more wondering about what to put on my resume than what to say about it in person. I'm afraid it won't look great to have that on my resume, but I think having nothing listed since 2009 would look worse. I am in Las Vegas at least, where the average person seems a but more understanding that poker is not "just gambling" and more people have known poker pros.

embracing it is definitely the way to go. if you sell yourself well people will look at poker and either toss your resume in the trash because of bias or be super interested.

generally it's polarized results imo

Poker isn't as bad on the resume as most people think, especially in a competitive job market. Yes, 90%+ of your applications will get thrown out in the initial filters. But if there's 100 applicants for every job you'd rather have a decent shot at 5% of the jobs you apply for than be the 75th percentile guy on every one.

It's kinda like tinder. Being a decent looking guy, say top 20%, with a standard boring profile gets you nowhere when every woman can afford to be selective as ****. But if you're average looking and have siq tattoos or are in a cool band or have siq travel photos you're gonna get tons of interest from the people who are into that.

Guy opens HJ, I 3 bet cutoff with red 99, button caps, sb calls, HJ calls, I call.

Flop 542 all hearts. Checks to button who bets, sb calls, HJ raises, we all call.

Turn 5x, sb and HJ check, I bet, button calls, sb folds, HJ raises and I fold.

River 9x. HJ bets, button calls and HJ shows quad 5s. Whew.

Polarized is actually good. The people who will never hire you immediately throw your resume in the trash. You win. The people who like the fact that you're self-employed or self-motivated invite you to the interview. You win again. The fact that some people hate it is good. The whole job search is finding one job that you want that wants you. As long as the interested group doesn't consist of 0 companies, you're fine. Getting a lot of interviews with people who think you're a meh candidate can make you feel better (I'm talking to a lot of people), but isn't actually worthwhile.

It depends. If your resume is strong but with holes, you're probably fine. You'd get fewer interviews than someone with a typical seamless resume. If your resume is weak for the position you want, your poker career makes it even harder to get an interview. It might also differentiate you from other weaker candidates. In some fields around here, there are almost no strong candidates because unemployment is so low. Since you need exactly one "yes"...

Chillrob,

1. Leaving a gap of that size is definitely worse than putting "self-employed." Putting "equity trader" or other deceptive bull**** is worse than putting "in prison."

2. You have to understand that gambling is viewed very negatively in general and metrics for success in poker are not well understood (not even by poker players lol). Expect "but how much did you lose" to be used non-ironically.

3. Focus on the parts that are universally applicable. Liken it to consultancy - you set your hours and schedule, you succeeded or failed by your own hand, etc.

4. I have never seen a poker gap, but I'll speak on other gaps. It's about how you present it. If you present it as something you chose to do, it's a cool story whether it ended in success or failure. If you present it as something that you were forced to do or something that happened to you, it smacks of desperation. Two parallel examples:

a. Guy #1 takes two years in Japan. I ask why, he basically tells me how bad his job was and how much he loves anime. I ask whether he learned the language or learned anything about anime, basically no. My lasting impression is a freak and very weird dude.

b. Guy #2 takes two years to travel. He wanted to live by his wits, basically worked his way across six continents. Feels recharged and ready to work for a non-behemoth company. It didn't work out for unrelated reasons but I recommended an offer.

5. Prepare some appropriate stories. Not 36 hour benders or anything involving debauchery, but something that will showcase a positive trait about you. Also prepare some reason why you're trading in a wildly successful freelancing "job" to apply for the job. Here's some generic bull**** to give you an idea of what I mean:

"I got to see a huge part of the US - Seattle, San Francisco, LA, San Diego, Vegas, Arizona, Minnesota, Florida - and I was really impressed by the people here. One day when I was driving from ___ to ___ I stopped to watch the {salmon run, ice fishermen, guy wearing Google Glass, alligators cross the freeway, one motorist helping a stranger} and I realized I want to be part of this."

Weird commerce happenings: I don't trust room safes and never use them If I leave, but my son loves to play with them. After randomly hitting button for 5-10 minutes he door pops open. I think the chance of him hitting the correct 4 numbers then open is 0 so that's alarming.

We were checking out and the bell hop was losding our bad and noticed 2 leftover avocados (brought my own) that he asked to have. I guess the California avocado shortage hit harder than I realized

I made it Talking Stick err Casino Arizona. Which is it? The outside of the building says Talking Stick, but the chips say Casino Arizona.
03-04-2017 , 06:08 PM
There are 2 casino arizonas (5 miles down the highway). Talking Stick is the name of the resort at one casino i believe. The talking stick location (indian bend) is the only one with poker. If you are gambling, let me know if you want to grab a drink later
