Typically, what do you guys use your iron man medals for?

Do you do the free rolls or get extra medals? Why?

Any other hints or guidance for a guy who may put the effort in to get going at the bronze level?

Bonus medals for me. I get the $26 tokens.

I do the freerolls and just buy the $600 bonus when I can (only once so far).

Edit: why freerolls is because they're easy to cash in. There are usually a bunch of players sitting out and they pay like 25%+ a lot of the time. The cash for just hitting the money is more than what the bonus medals are worth. So, that's why I play the freerolls. Um...so yeah get the medals so it stays profitable for me to play the freerolls :-P

I heard that there will larger bonuses in the future. I am a few weeks away from getting the $600... but I'll put that off for a while and hope that there is a $900-$1200 bonus offered soon.

Bonus medals = bonus FTP's = TV / Car / Haruka Avatar etc...

I go for the freeroll when I know I'll be around and use the medals on the tokens.

I play the freerolls and spend points on $26 tokens. But, if you're busy on Saturdays or just don't want to be tied down to play a certain day, bonus medals is reasonable. Also, you might want to save up medals for the $75 tokens if you just use most of the $26 tokens to play to win $75 tokens anyway. (even if you use the $26 tokens in sat.'s to bigger events, you might prefer playing $75 token sat.'s for the same events {a lot easier to go for top 3 than a winner-take-all})

I've been thinking a lot about this. I'm in my 10th month of iron man, and usually don't play the freerolls, so my medal count is moving up nicely. I think I've read in this forum before that "for the money", the 26 dollar token is the best value for your iron man medals. Has anyone purchased the 100k FTPs with iron man medals? Does purchasing points with the medals affect your MGR at all? I want to just accumulate the points to buy different stuff in the FTP store. Thoughts are appreciated.

Using the medal to buy FTPs is the worst thing you can do.

$26 token (140 medals): each medal worth ~18.6c
$75 token (400 medals): each medal worth 18.75c

1k FTPs go for about $3.50 (2+2 Marketplace price, on the high side nowadays). At this price, 100k FTPs are worth $350, which makes each medal worth 14 cents. If you have RB, you will also take an RB hit from spending your FTPs, thus your value per medal will be less.

There is no MGR hit for buying things from the Ironman store. If you buy FTPs, you will take a hit when you spend your FTPs.

Okay, so don't waste them on the FTPs, but use them to buy the tokens and score monies in the tournaments. Do you take a hit in any way for buying the tokens? And is the 600 dollar bonus worth it even though you take a hit in MGR while you clear it? Anything else in the iron man store worth looking at?

If you play tournaments with FTPs you take MGR hit for overlay only and in this case 1k FTPs is still worth almost $5.
By tournaments I mean cash tourneys where you can buy in directly with FTPs (double deuce, daily 10k, miniFTOPs).

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

No hit on the tokens, unless you enter a tournament with an overlay.

Up until now, this seems to be correct, however many of the affiliates have said that this maybe a loophole in the system and it will likely be changed in the near future.

So based on what I have read in this thread:

$100,$300,$600 bonus in ironman store = rakeback hit
$26,$75 tokens in ironman store = no rakeback hit

Amirite?

I had planned to use them on the actual $ but it seems this makes no sense if they are going to hit rb. (it makes no sense because the tokens become much cheaper since they have no rb hit).
09-12-2009 , 08:42 AM
Like dbc said, there's no MGR hot for the tokens as long as there is no overlay.

Trying to register for this month's one a day free roll but getting bounced out. I guess I'll be taking the medals instead if I can't register.

The one-a-day freeroll is different from the regular IM freeroll and is not worth it from what I've heard. It's only for players that played every single day the previous month.

Hey guys, for people that don't want to play tourneys, would the bonuses be the best value?

Here's my month so far - I only started at FTP last month (minus the last 2 days), what is my play;

yes, get the $600 bonuses.

Is paying for the bonus a good value, even with the hit to your rakeback?

Well it just means the $100 bonus is really only worth $73.

So define "good value". If there is nothing you want from the items, and you don't want to play MTT's or SNG's with the tokens, then yes its better then nothing.

That's not true. At least maybe that's what it is for bronze or something, but it depends on which level you made. For iron it was $75 this past weekend. I had 2 players sitting out at my first table and it paid something like 180 out of 525+. It was pretty easy to cash in IMO. You have to factor in that there is an overlay in these tournaments so there's some rakeback hit, but a $75 cash - hit to MGR is probably still well above the value of 100 bonus medals.

A lot of people here on this thread (and previous threads) say it is quite easy to cash in these tournies. The last Ironman paid 31% of players with the lowest payout of $75 which was for positions 91-180. Now if 31% get paid, 69% get nothing so 69% of the players don't find it easy.

Presumably not as many of those 69% are here as there are people from the 31%. Plus, many of those 69% probably never showed up.
