Hi guys, internet explorer takes a long time to start up, frequently freezes, and can be pretty slow at other times as well. When typing, in a web situation or just in microsoft word, the cursor often freezes, and often the cursor jumps back to the previous line, seemingly randomly.

The computer is one that my dad had at work which he was allowed to bring home, and as far as I know it has had these problems ever since it's been in the house.

Do I have an infected computer? Thanks a million in advance for your help.

Might not be the cause of your problem but this is certainly an issue. Windows uses Virtual Memory on your hard drive and since your C partition is so full this could be causing problems with that. Also FAT32 shouldn't really be used anymore without a good reason (and there aren't any good reasons that I know of).

You can try moving stuff over to your D partition since it has a lot of space and see if that helps. Otherwise I'd suggest backing up your data and reformatting the entire drive, using NTFS this time.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a million digshake, I'll try those things. Could you explain in detail how I do all those things? Is there a way to move stuff between the drives without cutting and pasting, because I tried that and the computer wouldn't let me.

By backing up, do you mean saving onto an external hard drive?

How do I reformat using NTFS?

Sorry if these questions seem silly.

I would think that copy/pasting between the two partitions should work. If it doesn't that may speak towards there being a bigger problem with your computer. One other way that you could try moving files would be to open My Computer and navigate to the D partition, then open another window to the location of the files you'd like to move and simply drag and drop the items between the windows.

Backing up your data means storing it anywhere that isn't your computer, so yes an external hard drive would be ideal. CDs or DVDs, while less convenient, also work for this purpose.

Reformatting your hard drive means wiping everything off of it and starting fresh (hence the importance of backing up any important data that you'd like to keep). You will have to reinstall Windows again once you do this, and during the installation process it will format your drive for you. Here's a tutorial on how to do this:

http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html

You'll probably want to skip down to the section labeled "Formatting and Installing from the Windows XP CD."

Also I should note that while I'm very confident that reformatting will solve the problems you've been having it isn't the most fun process to do, and is usually a last resort to solving computer problems. I wasn't able to find anything that looked off from the log you posted, but it may be worth your time to try running an anti-virus program or something like CCleaner to see if that doesn't help your situation before taking a drastic action like that. Of course the only way to get rid of the FAT32 partition would be to reformat so I'd still highly recommend it for that reason alone, but it is entirely possible that you could get your computer working smoothly again without needing to reformat.

Feel free to PM me if you run into problems or have any questions.

Jeeze, before formatting, try uninstall that bloated Norton 360 and try with something lighter, more efficient and free : comodo by example.

Sorry to bump, but I want to thank digshake, and also AceMuncher. My dad has a guy coming to look at the laptop, and won't let me touch it until then, so I haven't applied any of your advice. However if I do I'll make sure to post an update here. Thanks again.
