why won't my linksys router work?

Seems weird.
I just normally plug in my internet and it works fine.

Today it was working fine. Then, later, it wasn't working fine.
I can plug the comcast internet directly into my computer.
I get a full signal that says I am connected to my router.
But when I plug the internet into the router I get nothing now whereas a few hours ago it was dandy.

I know this is probably not enough information but to my feeble little mind this is all I see happening and I really don't understand why I can plug the internet into my router, look at my computer and see that I am actually connected to my router, and then not get internet on my computer.

I've unplugged the linksys router and re-started my computer a couple of times. Disconnected from the router on my computer and then re-connected. And even did a system-restore to yesterday.

Anyhone have any ideas why something like this would happen to my linksys?

Re: why won't my linksys router work?

arrrgh, this stuff is all so weird.
I just unplugged the modem for the ump-teenth time and then reset the router again. And after a little bit THIS time it actually worked and I'm back on wireless.
And I have no idea what I did differently from the 10 or so other times I thought I did mostly the same thing in the past few hours.

This has happened to me a couple of times with the linksys and I'm really not sure what needs to be done to get my computer to recognize the new signal it sends after I reset it or whatever the hell it is that's causing the problem.

So I'm happy that it works again. But I'm dreading the next time it happens so if anyone has ideas what this might be all about I would be interested.

Re: why won't my linksys router work?

I put mine next to the fishtank and moisture eventually got to it.

If disconnecting everything and then reconnecting doesn't work then you will need to reset the router to factory defaults (consult your manual, should be available from linksys website). If that doesn't work you'll need a new router.

edit: forgot you're connecting wirelessly, obviously resetting to factory defaults would then cause you to have to reset the wireless settings

anyway, you wouldn't happen to want a couple of retarded kittens? (sadly roomy wouldn't part with them anyway)

Re: why won't my linksys router work?

Not sure what model of the Linksys you are using....the WRT54G is the most common and considered the "old standby" since it's been around so long. I'm also not 1000% sure if you are hardwiring to the router or trying to connect wirelessly? My advice right now would be to hardwire your computer to the router and go to Linksys website and download the latest firmware for you particular model router. There will be instructions on how to do the firmware upgrade, which is REALLY simple and takes about 1 minute. Upgrading the firmware in those routers really seems to help work out some "bugs" sometimes.

Also, for future reference, if you are connecting to the router wirelessly and having all these problems, hardwire to the router instead, then see if you can get online. That will help number the problem down to the wireless aspect and not the entire router itself. Good luck!

Re: why won't my linksys router work?

This doesn't sound like a problem with the router. It sounds more to me like you had a problem with your cable service.

I have Comcast also and assume you have the same basic setup that I do: coaxial cable from the wall (just like one you'd plug into a TV) to a cable modem, then ethernet cable out from the modem to a router. I have an ethernet cable from the router to my desktop and use wireless for a couple of laptops and an Xbox 360.

I occasionally have problems with my cable modem dropping its connection to the Comcast network. I found a way to check the incoming signal strength through the modem on DSL Reports -- can't remember exactly how I did it -- and my signal level is on the low end of acceptable which is what I assume causes this to happen. When it does, my hardwired and wireless computers still see the router fine and can transfer files to each other, but they can't access the internet.

I'm guessing you fixed your problem by power cycling the modem.

If you have this problem again, I would (in order):

- Turn off the computer and unplug the power to the router and the modem. It's a good idea to wait about 1 minute before plugging anything back in but not always necessary.

- Plug the modem back in and wait for it to connect to the network. You should have some status LED's on the modem which will let you know when it's connected. It usually takes mine about 15-30 seconds to connect.

- Plug the router back in and wait for it to connect to the modem. Again, you should have some status LED's on the router to let you know when it's finished.

- Then turn the computer back on and see if everything works.

Hopefully you won't need to test this out, but let me know if it doesn't work.

Re: why won't my linksys router work?

I'm having a similar problem with my linksys. I have to unplug the router about 3-4 times a day because it can't get the internet. Imho, it's just the router dying and I'm trying to buy a belkin.

Re: why won't my linksys router work?

Micro,

I had a similar issue with my Linksys WRT310N recently. I had full signal strength but a "local only" connection, so effectively had no internet. The ISP was working, as I could connect directly from the modem to the PC.

Go here: http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/chat

That takes you to a Live Chat with Linksys support. In my case, they helped me quickly reconfigure my router and I haven't had a problem since. They are friendly, helpful, and efficient. Good luck.

Re: why won't my linksys router work?

Can you see any other wireless routers when you pull up the View Available Wireless Networks?

Sometimes if someone close to you just got a new wireless router the settings could conflict with yours. When you reset the router did you just unplug it or did you use a pin to push in a little hole on the back or bottom of the router(this is a hard reset which completely takes the router back to default settings)?
