What is the email of choice for discerning 2+2 users? What is the email of choice for discerning 2+2 users?

I wanted to post this in OOT but I figured that I'd be (correctly) trolled into oblivion. Still, I trust that the collective of 2+2 users is a good mind to pick when it comes to quasi-technical things.

Even though I know yahoo mail's prime has come and gone (5 yrs ago) I have stuck with them as my primary due to abject laziness.

What is the standard email to use for discerning 2+2 users? I am open to suggestions. Yahoo is 100% awful now with their intrusive ads and everchanging format.

Thanks in advance for your honest input. I know this isn't the most thrilling subject.

A discerning 2plus2 user doesn't reveal that.

I've been using Juno since the 90's as my primary email. It's free and really easy to navigate.

gmail with 2-factor authentication so that you don't get hacked like everyone else.

Certainly something with 2-factor authentication set up.

Gmail is way better than Yahoo mail. Nothing's perfect (and you may have opinions concerning companies crawling your message data).

The discerning CTH poster might run their own email server, but that's probably a bit much.

Choosing an e-mail provider is much less important than your e-mail practices.

For example:
  • Make sure you do not use your personal e-mail for anything that is money related. Use it for communicating only. If it is hacked, the hacker can extract no value out of it (besides your address book).
  • Create separate, unguessable e-mail accounts for each of your financial accounts. Paypal, eBay, Poker accounts, Amazon, Alibaba, etc. and use them for this service only.

If your Paypal related e-mail is 5j49dj3n6am299yuo@gmail.com, how likely is it going to be hacked?

Without a doubt, Gmail.

I also have dropbox installed on the 3 computers I use constantly (2 at work, 1 at home). I keep a password protected Excel file (so I only need to remember 1 password, the master) with pretty much all the info I need for everything. All passwords/logins for every single thing in my life. One tab for all work-related things, one tab for all personal. Whenever anything changes I save it to the master file so that if I make a change at work I can open it at home later and the info will be updated.

Not sure how secure it is, but I'll just have to trust that Excel encryption is good enough unless the NSA wanted to get me, and if they really wanted to I'm sure they could.

An password protected file in Excel for your entire digital identity (read actual identity) is awful practice. You should not consider your file uncrackable. And you keep it in the cloud?

If you want to go the "one password" approach do it properly and use Keepass. Watch Part 1 of Funkyworms' videos.

Thanks, I'll look into that. I never really had an issue with my passwords/information. I should be more secure though.

No-one has a problem with passwords/information... until they have a problem.

I mean, is it that bad? Are people that advanced that they can really crack an Excel password protected file so easily?

I'm not overly paranoid. I don't use Tor network and some massive security vault. I've done this for like 9 years and never had anything even close to an issue.

I doubt Excel's password protection function would stand up to any sort of serious assault.

Even if it did, though, your password's probably not going to last long against a brute force attack if someone got hold of your spreadsheet. How many characters and how "strong" is it?

Using a spreadsheet program to encrypt your passwords is the real issue though. Why not use something designed for that purpose?

VBA Code To Unlock A Locked Excel Sheet [instructables.com]

How easy is it? The toughest step is to copy/paste the following:
Sub PasswordBreaker()

'Breaks worksheet password protection.

Dim i As Integer, j As Integer, k As Integer
Dim l As Integer, m As Integer, n As Integer
Dim i1 As Integer, i2 As Integer, i3 As Integer
Dim i4 As Integer, i5 As Integer, i6 As Integer
On Error Resume Next
For i = 65 To 66: For j = 65 To 66: For k = 65 To 66
For l = 65 To 66: For m = 65 To 66: For i1 = 65 To 66
For i2 = 65 To 66: For i3 = 65 To 66: For i4 = 65 To 66
For i5 = 65 To 66: For i6 = 65 To 66: For n = 32 To 126
ActiveSheet.Unprotect Chr(i) & Chr(j) & Chr(k) & _
Chr(l) & Chr(m) & Chr(i1) & Chr(i2) & Chr(i3) & _
Chr(i4) & Chr(i5) & Chr(i6) & Chr(n)
If ActiveSheet.ProtectContents = False Then
MsgBox "One usable password is " & Chr(i) & Chr(j) & _
Chr(k) & Chr(l) & Chr(m) & Chr(i1) & Chr(i2) & _
Chr(i3) & Chr(i4) & Chr(i5) & Chr(i6) & Chr(n)
Exit Sub
End If
Next: Next: Next: Next: Next: Next
Next: Next: Next: Next: Next: Next
End Sub
Excel 13 supposedly beefed up security <cough>bull****</cough> but there's still no way in hell I'm trusting any spreadsheet with sensitive information.

I think now that Truecrypt appears to be unsafe, a good way to protect sensitive information is to put it in a 7-zip archive that is pw protected.
