If you want to upgrade from XP or Vista to Windows 7 you might want to pre-order before July 11th. I ordered Home Premium today for $49.99 from Amazon. The regular price will be $119.99 if you miss out. The Professional version upgrade is also available for $99.99 instead of $199.99 normal price.

And for those of you in the UK... there apparently isn't going to be an upgrade version (but Microsoft says the full version will be at their upgrade price. Whatever that means.)

Story here.

How does the upgrade actually work?

I have Windows 7 RC on a new PC. I have copies of XP on a couple of old computers that arn't being used anymore. Is there anyway I can spend $50 and get a legit version of 7 on my new computer?

The $50 upgrade is from legal versions of XP or Vista.

Right.

But does upgrading a legal version of XP or Vista result in a 'full copy' of Windows 7 that can then be uninstalled and transferred to a different computer?

What are you trying to do? For every copy of XP or Vista you have running that you want to upgrade you'll need to buy a 7 upgrade disc.

I think he's asking if somehow you can use it as a full copy installation disk(as in installing on an empty drive) but I would assume you need XP or Vista on the PC to use this?

Sounds like they are only pre-selling "upgrade" discs which will most likely check for a valid installed OS before doing their install.

Yes, you can do a proper clean installation with the upgrade media, not a tough thing to do as you'd use the installer to create/delete/format the partition(s) you wish to use on the drive.

Maybe a stupid question, but should I buy Home Premium or Professional? I'm a home user which would suggest that I should go for the former, but I know that with XP a lot of people use the Professional version.

I use this computer for working, poker, movies, music, etc.

i think this is a good question, i hope they simplifed this in 7 but i can't remember.

in vista, if you got home premium, you could not upgrade to vista business, you could only upgrade to ultimate--not sure if they are doing the multiple flavors the same way in 7 but i imagine the home premium would have the same network limitations as vista (which aren't a problem if you are a soho user).
