Using a DSL Router/Modem combo as a Router with Cable Internet Using a DSL Router/Modem combo as a Router with Cable Internet

i just had cable internet installed and the modem has one Ethernet jack. i have 2 DSL router/modems (an ActionLink and a D-link). they both have 4 LAN jacks.

i tried cable modem -> DSL modem in LAN 1 -> DSL modem -> computer in LAN 4 and it worked instantly, but when i tried to connect other devices in LAN 2 or 3 they did not register a connection.

any advice to make one of these router/modem combos function before i buy a new router?

i think your best bet is to look around on google for "use dsl gateway as router"

problem seems to be that your old gateway is behaving as a switch (on the 4 ports) so that the first device connecting is getting the IP address your cable router is offering.

It may be possible to set things up a way to make this work, but it's probably not worth the time it would take to research it

i need to recharge my patience be4 digging in to the stuff in that link. a bit more complicated than the "Settings->Router->On" i was hoping for. i'll give it a shot 2moro, thanks again.

If you have access to login to the cable modem, see if it has a dhcp option to turn on, then your initial setup would work. Otherwise, you're not likely to be able to configure a DSL modem to wan->lan as the nat is typically done from the DSL to lan.

Odd, are the DSL modems still behaving like routers? Can you access their web interface at the default IP?
It sounds like those other LAN ports aren't being switched, need packet captures to know.

Are you looking to just have more LAN ports to share Internet to wired devices via the cable modem? A switch would be cheaper than a new router.

a switch wouldn't work, it would produce the exact same results he's getting with his DSL gateway. That's because a gateway is part modem, part router, part switch. He only has physical access to the switch parts of the gateway (through his cable modem).

It seems unlikely there's a way to configure one of the gateway switch ports as a router interface, which is why it's way easier to just go buy a router.
