It depends on what is causing the problem as to whether you can do anything about it.... the problem could be your computer, the wifi connection, the router, the ISP or the internet in general.
You say this has started 'recently'. Can you define recently? also, where are you based? London had a massive routing problem at the end of last week (starting Thursday, I believe) - one of the central carriers was having routing problems that caused all sorts of bandwidth issues for any traffic lucky enough to go through their data centre.
Things you can try....
- Do you have the problem using wifi? Have you tried the same on wired?
- How are you measuring your bandwidth? Have you tried disabling AV whilst running the tests?
- Have you tried using your computer on anothers wifi? Do you get speed problems?
- Have you tried using someone elses computer on your wifi? Same problem?
- Have you spoken to your ISP about this??
- Have you tried a different router / modem?
