Trying to connect 2 external monitors

As the title says, I bought two external monitors to hook up to my laptop, which has a AMD m880g w/ ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250--I'm assuming this is the graphics card. I hook one monitor up through the vga port and another through an hdmi cable.

The laptop could only display one monitor at proper resolution, and the other at fairly less than best resolution. The picture looks very pixalated. Also, the laptop couldn't render its own screen. So, I bought an external usb video card hoping that I could display one of the monitors using that, with the laptop able to render the other monitor and its own screen. However, this hasn't worked, and I can't tell why. I'm terrible with graphics stuff.

Some info:
Total Available Graphics Memory: 1981MB
Dedicated Video Memory: 320MB
System Video Memory: 0MB
Shared System Memory: 1661MB

This is with the external usb card connected to a monitor. My thought is that the laptop is still trying to display the 2 monitors using its own memory.

Any thoughts on what's going on? Like I said, I'm terrible with this stuff.
