Re: This is it, the Samsung 830 128GB and 256GB are both on sale

Bump

The 128GB version is going on sale 7/9 for $89.99, starts at or about 3am EST (midnight California time). Newegg - tax in NJ, TN & CA. If you need an SSD at this capacity this is the one to get. Extremely fast, great rep for quality, great price. Should sell out relatively quick.

Re: This is it, the Samsung 830 128GB and 256GB are both on sale

gonso would the 128GB version on sale at Newegg work in a 2007 Lenovo T61 still running (non 64) WinXP with a Intel Core Duo 2 processor? I feel like I looked into this in the past and without 64bit Win I couldn't add an SSD to this laptop.

I definitely want to pick up one of these drives, just wondering if I'm going to be adding it to a new laptop or if I could throw it in this one and see some serious performance improvement.

fwiw this thread is about my laptop search:

Re: This is it, the Samsung 830 128GB and 256GB are both on sale

Any 2.5" SSD will work in basically any notebook with a SATA II or III connection, it will just run a little slower over SATA II is all (SATA II can't carry data as fast). But that's okay because SATA II is still more than fast enough to see a big improvement.

Just based on age I know yours isn't SATA III, but you could open your notebook and look at the drive itself to make sure it isn't IDE.

If SATA then you're good to go, and then of course you could always move it to a new laptop later. Given price there's no reason to buy a SATA 2 SSD at all.

I've got a hitachi hts722010k9sa00 in my current notebook which is a SATA and note and IDE based on what I can tell from Google. If you can confirm that I'm looking at the right info it would be awesome. If not I'll just pop out the drive and take a look. Was just hoping to save some time using a google search and forum help.

thanks again gonso, your help is much appreciated.

That was almost 2 weeks ago, but you're bound to see it again before too long.

Another one worth looking at is the SanDisk Extreme which is generally pretty cheap, Amazon has its price jumping around from $185 to $210 at any given hour. There's a small concern about the controller type but this particular model hasn't been showing any problems, so it may have worked out. I'd say the 830 is a slightly safer choice but otherwise hard to go wrong with either if one of the other were on sale.

It is SATA but appears to be SATA1 -

Looking up your notebook, it appears Lenovo has the BIOS capped at SATA 1 speeds in that model. If there's not a workaround (BIOS update or something) to get it to SATA2 that's probably a dealbreaker for an SSD in your case.

If what I'm reading is true, Lenovo may have screwed you a bit:

For those in the market for a nice 240GB, Buy.com has the Sandisk Extreme for 169 shipped, 159 for new customers. Killer reviews on the drive and it's as fast as any SSD made today, seems to be a reliable model also. I'm in for one.

Thanks, I just ordered one. I've got a laptop and can't fit everything in a 128 GB drive, so this is perfect.

I didn't realize Buy.com had such crappy reviews lately. I've ordered a couple things from them before without issue. They've already shipped my drive so hoping for the best.

same here. mine already shipped. I did notice some of the bad reviews, but figured I'd take a shot anyway.
