Safe to charge iPod nano w/ Kindle USB power adaptor?

Per Apple's website, their iPod Power Adaptor puts out 12 volts and 1.0 amps. The Kindle adapter puts out 5 volts and 0.85 amps. So using the Kindle adapter would take around 3 times as long to charge my iPod, but shouldn't be capable of overheating it or causing damage some other way, correct?

it's fine. the usb charger will output 5V constant over USB. pretty much all the usb power adapters are interchangable, but the cheaper ones are only .5A. Most cell phones come with 1A chargers and tablets are usually 2A. THe device will only draw what it can use.

But if the charger only outputs LESS than the device can use, that's not a problem (except for the increased charging time), right?

Correct. Most usb ports on older computers, for example, only output .5A. Totally fine just slower

Also I'll throw in a recommendation for an aftermarket charger with multiple ports. I've got a rosewill one with 4 ports.

With 1 device its 2A per port
2 devices is 1A
3-4 is .5A
