Running 2 anti virus softwares

Noob here so bare with me, i have recently added AVG (as suggested by gabethebabe) to my poker pc along with the mcafee i already had. AVG just picked up this hidden driver so i did abit of searching and it seems its a mcafee driver: http://forums.avg.com/us-en/avg-foru...show&id=211563.

So i found out by reading that running 2 anti virus softwares is a bad idea: http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-foru...ct=show&id=441

I was running both because i was under the impression that AVG doesnt have a firewall so thought i could run mcafee for the firewall purpose.

Whats the best option??

Thanks

Re: Running 2 anti virus softwares

The answer is no.
You do not run two AV programs at the same time, ever.

You have to pick one.

Albeit, if you're not running any form of live or realtime protection, you can run them after each other if you're willing to deal with a lot of false positives.
The better solution for that is doing the online scans of the major companies.

Decide for one platform, completely uninstall the other.

Re: Running 2 anti virus softwares

Use comodo firewall
download comodo internet security and only install the firewall

Rid McAfee from your system
Live happily ever after.

Also you can do pretty well without a third party firewall. The Windows firewall gives basic protection which should be enough for most users that do not get themselves into bad spots by visiting shady websites on a frequent basis.

Re: Running 2 anti virus softwares

Does Windows Defender in Win8 count as an AV? People seem to like it and I'm tempted to just roll with it if I don't need Avira or something. From MS's page on W8:

Quote:
We recommend that you use an antimalware app to help protect your PC from malware and other potentially harmful software, and that you keep the app up to date. Windows Defender is a feature of Windows 8 and is enabled by default in Windows 8 Release Preview. If you prefer to use any of the antimalware apps listed on this page, Windows Defender will silently turn itself off so that the antimalware app you choose can help protect your PC.

Re: Running 2 anti virus softwares

AFAIK Windows Defender is a supplement to your AV - an antispyware.

The use of these kinds of terms is kinda ambiguous though (anti virus, anti spyware, anti malware etc).

Microsoft Security Essentials is a full blown AV.
