Rooting your phone or tablet
I have a samsung galaxy s2 skyrocket (love it) and am going to get an android tablet, (either Asus tf300t or the 700 series idk yet) and I have read a bunch about rooting both your phone and tablet, mainly from XDA. My phone is not currently rooted.
I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with rooting and if they would share their experience, good or bad, and whether or not they recommended rooting or not.

Yes root your device. You should probably just head over to the android thread in other other topics.

Re: Rooting your phone or tablet
We don't go to OOT.
But it seems rooting is +ev, but I have no experience doing it and want to avoid bricking obv.

Just make sure you follow the directions and you will be fine. Rooting is awesome! But watch out flashing ROMs can get addicting
I was really nervous as well, and I am a pretty techy person as well. But once it was done it all seemed so simple

Re: Rooting your phone or tablet
^^
What device(s) do you have that are rooted? I'm more worried about bricking the forthcoming tablet obv, but so excited to be able to back up with ease and over clock to play games and whatnot.
And flashing roms? When I think of roms I think like n64 roms, but I've come to understand that ROM's are basically mods to the OS?

Re: Rooting your phone or tablet
Roms are the OS.
Typically they start with modified versions of the existing OS but there are also some custom built from the ground up from stock android.
Flashing a new rom will typically erase all your settings and apps, so you need to use something like Titanium Backup to restore everything after you flash.

Which you can only use after you're rooted and have SU right? And there's another app one needs to save their root for after they get OTA updates from the Dev.?

The ROM should have the SU stuff built in. Maybe it is different on different devices, but typically you should not or cannot get an OTA update with a custom ROM. But really there is no need as any important update is going to be cooked into an update for the custom ROM that you are on.

Hows the HTC before/after root?
And I know you can still get OTA updates after a root, but I guess not with a custom ROM?

Correct. Your carrier will not provide OTA updates for a custom rom. If you send you phone in for service, you will need to unroot and install stock rom as well.

Yeah I know it voids the warranty, which is one of the things I'm concerned about rooting/unlocking.
But it seems the benefits are worth the risk, and the Tab I'm likely to get has a root app, sparkyroot, so you could just follow the instructions on the app which is cool.
My phone however is a different story, I would love to overclock my phone as I just discovered the Onlive app and it was crushing my phone memory with nothing running in the background.

Night and day. First, the stock was GB and I have been running ICS with Sense 3.6 for months. I have it OC'd to 1.5Ghz (stock is 1.2Ghz dual core) and the big thing is that all of the bloatware from the carrier is gone. Plus much better memory management. My wife has the same phone and it is not rooted and the difference is clear, to me at least.

Yep, I am doing that right now as I have an issue with my phone. Not happy about the inconvenience but way worth it.

It voids the warranty, but as Freakin pointed out most of the time you can put everything back to stock if you ever had to send your phone back and you shouldn't have any issue. Unless of course you ****ed up your phone by OC'ing too much or something. That sort of thing is a little more risky.

Yeah, it sucks not to have ICS for the phone, def a major reason to root. And obv don't want to literally burn out the phone by overclocking to much. Though I think there is an app that allows you to control the clockspeed of the device it is installed on, so that would be a direction I would go.
