you can also download a program that lets you reinstall with just a thumb drive. Win10 keys are tied to your hardware ID, so you don't even need a serial. (I write mine down just in case)

UnitedAs1 - I think Tom's Hardware still publishes hierarchy charts that compare processors and GPUs. Bear in mind that they may be comparing them for gaming purposes rather than what you have planned, but it'll be a rough guide at least.

Anyone have a good idea about routers/modems, I'm looking at buying a new one as my ISP stock one is pretty unrealiable at times, But I do not know what makes a good router. I understand I should be buying a router with a built in modem to keep things simple. Could be wrong on that.

But any advice you can give will be great

Thanks in advanced

What ISP are you using? With some ISPs you have to use their modem - Sky and Virgin for example - you can plug your own router in to their modem to handle wifi etc, but you are still reliant on their modem.

The main thing on routers is to ensure that the wifi is sufficient for your needs, a router with a/c capability will suit most. Then it is just going for reliability.

Experiencing a weird issue with an older MacBook Pro. It's an older machine, 2011, and has given me very few problems. I am not a computer guy but here's the best I can describe it.

I ran a standard update check today and installed the latest OS. Then rebooted and was getting messages about something called FileVault. Sure whatever encryption. 2 hours later my system freezes. Now, not matter what kind of reboot I do my cursor moves around the screen fluidly but I cannot click anything which makes choosing any option on any screen impossible.

After some googling I tried a safe mode restart, a cmd-R restart and a cmd-option-rp reboot all to no effect. I am getting to the same "reset password" screen and unable to click on anything. Any ideas?

After more googling it's probably something with the track pad and likely my very old, very ****ty battery. I haven't the tools to take it apart and was planning on getting a new machine anyway so I'll likely do the latter and then mess around with the old one later.

I'm with BT at the moment and have the BT home hub 5, The problem I'm having is the internet drops every so often, I don't think that's a router problem though but could be wrong.

1 thing that is a problem and I'm not sure if it's windows 10 OS or it's the wireless adapter driver or the router itself. The wireless will drop connection and I will have to restart the computer to get it back, I need it to happen again to see if it shows a list of wifi networks in the area.

But basically I just want to have a reliable router I would want a router/modem combined. BT have got a new router so I'll ring up and see if I can get it for free. If they ask me to pay it's probably better going else where.

Both of these are well known problems with BT routers. My brother has one and always has connectivity problems, both to the router and the router to BT. Exactly as you describe.

I believe BT allow you to use your own modem, but you may want to check that with them.

You might be able to get their latest router free, but it will be a struggle. If you look around the BT forums you will find that there are lots of complaints about their routers, you might be able to use that to get a free upgrade.

Yeah I'm going to ring up today, If they ask me to pay I think I'd rather just go and pay for a new router, Could you suggest any?

My computer is about 5 years old. Right now it struggles and gets sluggish with a lot of chrome tabs open.

I got it back when SSDs were expensive so I only have a 64gb one in, it's nearly full and I cache chrome to it. I also have 4 gb of ram.

My mb is a: ASUS P8H67-M LE Rev 3.0, Sockel 1155, mATX, DDR3
And processor is a: Intel Core i3-2100 Box, LGA1155

Will getting more ram improve things or should I be looking at processor too?
I've been meaning to get a new SSD, is that likely to improve my chrome issues?

RAM - are you using a 64bit Windows or 32bit? If only 32bit, then you cannot increase the ram beyond what you have without reinstalling a 64bit version of Windows.

When chrome is sluggish, what does the task manager say about the amount of ram in use?

SSD - Having an SSD that is nearly full will cause performance problems, although I can't say whether it is the cause of your chrome issues. I think that the recommendation is to not exceed 80% of usage so you may want to consider a larger one.

Thanks!

Yeah I have 64 bit Windows.

Yeah chrome gets sluggish all the physical memory is in use.

I'm guessing windows is probably using the ram for memory too with the SSD filling up? I'll replace that anyway and see how things are go.

I started a separate thread but I'll also ask a question in here. Mods can close my other thread if I get an answer here.

So, buying a new budget PC. Used mainly for freelancing, poker and movies. Would also like an option to run a medium heavy game (fifa etc.)

3 Options I have at the moment:

1. Prebuilt system (refurbished) - 1 year warranty
Intel core i5 4x 6500 (3,2 GHz)
8 GB DDR4
1 TB HDD
Intel HD Graphics 530
Windows 10

Price: 500 EUR (555 USD)

I have the option to add a 240 GB SSD which would bring the total price to around 600 EUR (670 USD)

2. Custom build system - 2 year warranty on components
Intel Core i5 6600 4x 3,3 GHz
Gigabyte GA-B150M-DS3
Intel HD graphics 530
8 GB HyperX Fury Dual
WD 2TB Blue SATA
Crucial 240 GB BX200
500W Corsair CX500 80+

Price: 650 EUR (725 USD)

If I add Windows it will cost me at least 100 EUR more - 750 EUR (835 USD)

3. Option 3 - a budget AMD system (refurbished) - 1 year warranty
AMD A10-7800 (4x3,5 GHz)
12 GB DDR3 RAM
2 TB/7200 HDD
AMD Radeon R7 graphics
Microsoft Windows 8

Price: 430 EUR (480 USD)

If I add a 240 GB SDD it comes down to 535 EUR (595 USD)

Any suggestions?

Hey guys i know this is my thread.

So i use google chrome for web browsing and usually have lot of windows and tabs. I would go on sites like youtube to stream. However when i right click on a video then open in new window, it doesn't automatically load the video in that window unless i click on that tab. So if i do this in the window or right click and do this with a bunch of videos, none of these youtube videos load at all until i click on that tab. I basically like to load a ton of youtube videos at once. I also do this with other streaming sites as well. But the same issue. I do this so i like few videos to be loaded so it doesn't go slowly if you know what i mean if i want to skip parts.

Can someone tell me why im having these issues with youtube? Im assuming this has to do with my google chrome settings?

Also i have the same issue with other sites as well. For example, i have few tabs of sbr odds. It updates a lot etc. Its a betting odds site. So many times i would have a few tabs of sbr odds in a window. I then go click on another window. I then later on click on these sbr odds tabs and it has to refresh every single time. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? I don't like to have to click refresh every single time. It also does this with a few other sites as well and its very annoying. So for videos i stream thats not youtube, i basically like to say open 5 videos. Then click load, then of course you could see it is streaming but i want to stream the entire thing so i can watch it all later. Thus imagine a 30 minute video and i want to stream a few of these so i can watch these later on where i can just click play and it plays smoothly. The thing is my other issue with this is when i am able to do this with certain streaming sites... when i later click on these tabs... i need to refresh it again which means i have to do it all over. Could this possibly be related to that site or its my google chrome settings?

Buying a new computer/monitor for gaming and pretty clueless where to even start looking. Thought about building one but have never done that before and wouldn't even know how to pick out the right pieces (although I know some of the things I want). So if I can just order one online, I'll probably do that. Can anyone help point me in the right direction? My budget is ~2k

The only things I MUST have are 500gb or 1tb SSD drive and a super high end video/sound card. Thanks

Recently been looking to get a new computer myself, but not really for hardcore gaming, but have done a fair amount of specs.

Made up this spec for you at a cost of 1.6k total. Hopefully it'll give you a good benchmark to what you're looking for.

First of all sorry for asking a question in paulys thread i am aware he is trying to patent the asking of questions on this forum but im having some issues with windows 10 if anyone can help.

I upgraded to windows 10 a few days ago and everything was fine at first. When i tried to play a steam game i realised my secondary monitor was set as the main one and switched it over in the display settings. Thats when the problems started the text on my main monitor is really blurry especially on skype and on poker tables.

My main monitor is a 40 inch with 3840 x 2160 res and my secondary monitor is a 27 inch with 2560 x 1440 res.

The text on the 27 inch is perfect and i don't understand why the problems started when i changed which monitor was the primary one.

Have spent a while googling the problem and adjusting the scale on the main monitor and nothing is making the text clearer. Also i don't want lower res so increasing the scale isnt really a option. Have also tried changing back the 27 inch to the primary monitor and that had no effect im at a total loss.

My graphics card is the

NVIDIA Geforce GTX 690

Thanks alot.

EDIT.

Managed to work it out myself just after posting. Seems when i updated my graphics drivers at the same time i enabled multi-gpu mode which messed up the display. Disabled that and its back to normal now only took me a few hours to work out.

Hey guys yes its me again the original poster.

Well my sager np2740 that i bought a few years ago has shut down while i was using it and no longer turned on. Went to 1 repair shop and they took a while to look at it and then told me they cannot turn it on and its motherboard issue. Said my hard drive is fine and i got them to take it out. I then later on went to another laptop place where the guy there is very smart with computers. He said there wasn't any point of opening it up the sager based on what i told him and he said motherboard has went bad.

I called xoticpc on this and since im out of warranty, this requires sending it back to them for an RMA then sager will tell me the problem and tell me the cost to fix it. I read on the forums that a sager mother board cost at least $500... and that doesn't include fixing it... thats just for the motherboard. So it seems like no point of doing this since it might cost $800 or so only for this laptop to have more issues later on. Also i have an old asus u45jc-a1 laptop where keyboard stopped working. Bought it to repair shop and was told it doesn't work and the 2nd place i went to said its the motherboard but said he rarely seen an issue like this on the laptop. Basically the only key that works when typing when on chrome is the letter F... it clicks on find. Any other letter there is no clicking. And when you left click anything on the desktop icon, it right clicks. So i have 2 laptops that broke and no laptop at the moment. Typing from a desktop now.

Im looking at a few laptops here and these are the ones im considering and looking for opinion. I need to get one asap. I play 20 tables, use HEM2 and Tableoptimizer and open a lot of chrome tabs and youtube videos a bit.

1. Asus. This looks pretty nice but it might be a bit slow? The thing that worries me is someone mentioned the sleep function where computer goes to sleep when you put the lid down. I had the same issue with my asus u45jc except it would sometimes do it for no reason and that was a huge problem which is why i stopped using it.
https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX305...s=asus+zenbook

2. Asus very similar as 1st one
https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX303...s=asus+zenbook

3. Same as 2nd Asus but its i7 processor and 512gb ssd. I assume the ssd isn't big deal since you could just buy the 512gb sdd yourself? Thus its really the processor and screen? Big price increase from the 2nd and i heard i5 and i7 doesn't mean that much since its not quad core?
https://www.amazon.com/ZenBook-UX303...s=asus+zenbook

4. macbook pro 13.3. Is the dual core i5 processor still decent? I don't want the 15.4 because its a bit bigger than i like. Also isn't it true with hard drive, theres no point of upgrading with apple since everyone just buys a separate ssd? I don't know why anyone would upgrade to 256gb ssd from 128gb ssd since buying it yourself and installing it or having someone install it would cost much less? I think getting this and putting a 250gb or 512gb ssd would be good enough while ordering the 128gb? The ram is 8gb and i believe you can do up to 16gb ram BUT ONLY if you allow apple to do it. So you cannot upgrade it yourself. So this is a way for apple to get you to pay a lot. But i read anything more than 8gb is unnecessary. They also charge 200 dollars to upgrade from 8gb to 16gb. If you want to add 8gb on your laptop in ram, it cost less than 50 dollars only if its a nonmac.

http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/

5. macbook air

This laptop looks like its for someone that uses it for entertainment. So avoid this? Curious if anyone here uses this for heavy multitabling. Processor seems slower than a macbook pro. I would get the 13.3 as oppose to 11.6 as that is way too small even though i use with external monitor. It just looks like someone who wants a nice good looking laptop and does basic things like web browsing and youtube and chrome. Or am i wrong here? It does look good in terms of being very light and thin.

http://www.apple.com/macbook-air/specs.html

There were 2 other asus laptops that i wanted to post but they are both 15.6 and pretty bulky so i didn't want a bulky laptop.

I read zenbook is like a macbook except its much cheaper which is good. But the thing is i hear many of these laptops have issues on the reviews with the sleep button. I mean if you are playing poker and it goes to sleep, well i had this happen many times with my old asus and don't want that issue again. I don't want any issues or lessen issues with it etc. So im sort of leaning with macbook pro... if not one of those zenbooks. But if choosing either macbook pro or that more expensive zenbook, the macbook is a clear choice right? I will be using bootcamp which i heard is necessary to use windows on a mac. I hear people mention no point in buying a macbook for online poker but i want to make sure my laptop don't have issues. So i kind of want to stay away from other brands. I also have an old asus laptop bought many years ago that has many issues which is why i got a new sager. And also because the asus was too slow. I asked fozzy this in the holdem manager and he recommeneded i5 or i7 and ssd and said he doesn't know much about mac and has no experience.

Thanks.
