After resetting computer to factory setting and switching off modem, I installed a program which I used previously and it displayed free trial expired, which i use the free version anyway, but my question is, once the computer was restored to factory setting how do programs work out that the free trial was used? Just asking from computer security point of view?

thanks

Good question, I assume that when you registered the program on your PC it sent your PCs windows license key to the company's server.

When you reset your computer to being new it still had the same windows license key, and the company's server was able to detect that you were attempting to re-license the same windows installation.

Could also be basing it on IP address, hardware profile, etc. The only thing that really changes in a factory reset is starting out on a fresh slate (from software pov).
