hmm, has it caught anything? I've had two work machines and 1 home machine for the last few years not running anything and haven't had any problems. We're a Mac shop and aren't doing anything, all anecdotal of course but it's no where near as required as it is with Windows. Yet.

It's caught as much as my windows AV has the last two years

Your usage is important, and your setup as well. A corporate firewall and security system may take care of common threats, depending on how your work has things set up, if they do any network security at all.

In this day and age, I think a malicious url blocker is about all you need so long as you aren't dumb enough to execute any random file that comes to your inbox.

I want to try put windows on a external special USB card and just have access to one OS at a time. I'm afraid of the speed (80mo/Sec)

Do someone have this config. or a better idea?
I have no experience running Windows on a Mac.

But I believe that this should be the best, and fastest, option for you:

Hopefully, your MacBook has Apple's flash storage (or a third party SSD).

So you're saying you don't need one?

Is it worth getting retina if I am just going to be browsing/watching films and tv/streaming/skype and occasionally playing an MTT on a macbook?

Ultimately I want something thin, light, ultra portable that I can use in/on bed and won't get hot.

The Macbook Air looks quite a bit cheaper than the Pro (which seems like huge overkill for me) and the Macbook, which seems expensive.

Thoughts/advice please?

Currently using this macbook with added 256gb SSD, works great, but it gets hot in bed and the battery is like 2 hours at best:

do any mac laptops not practically burst into flames if you watch youtube for five minutes?

Get a good laptop desk. I notice the fan more playing mine craft with all the mods than I do while watching YouTube on how the mods work...

Anyone else move to the Mac lately?

I'm wondering what to do with all my Microsoft-format documents. I was hoping Pages would just open a Word doc and save it in the same format. But it wants to save things in Pages format. I don't want to be using non-standard file formats. I've tried to move to RTF and Google Docs over time, but haven't made the full transition.

Should I bite the bullet and pay for an Office subscription? Go all online with Google Docs?

I have been using Office 2011 Home and Student for Mac for about five years. One purchase with no subscription.

I just use open office for free forever and save to dot doc instead of dot docx

The new office is pretty good, works better with retina screens and the new full screen modes than office 11 did. 10 bucks a month on an office 365 subscription.

That's what I went with, for now at least, though I think it's costing me $7/month.

Hi,

Quick question,

Please help a noob,

Im about to buy a Macbook for the first time.

I need it for business- plan schedules tasks some company software with tasks and updates and similar things.

I travel a lot so I figures out I need a 13 inch bcs of portability and battery duration.

I noticed that air model has the best battery duration, whats the main difference between air and pro?

Any tips?

Thanks

One is powerful and can run applications smoothly, the other is an overpriced chrome book

Actually, one is ultraportable and powerful enough to run office apps and watch movies. I wouldn't develop on an Air but I've written documentation on one and miss how light it was compared to the 15" MPB I'm using now.

Can you get to a store and pick them each up?

there is a new macbook which is 12" and has 8gb ram and flash memory, 0.9kg super thin with retina display. bit cheaper than the mbp but not as much processing power (although doesn't sound like you will need much)

great battery, v portable, limited connectivity without an adaptor

From what I've read the Air sounds powerful enough for ordinary work. The new MacBook (even lighter) is underpowered and uses non-standard (USB-C) connectors. If you need power consider the MacBook Pro. I just got the 13", and I know some reviewers consider it to be the best laptop on the market now.

Trying to swap to Firefox all around. Got it setup on Linux and PC no problem. Installed it on Mac and I can't use it at all. Every page I try to go to, like google or yahoo or even mozilla's own website, gives a "your connection is not secure - The owner of www.google.com has configured their website improperly." error.

One thing I tried was setting FF to not use a proxy, but that didn't help.

Thoughts?
