*I asked a mod if it was cool for me to start this thread and they said yes*

I guess anything goes Mac related. Please keep the Mac sucks comments to yourselves though. Thanks

I'm trying to figure out how to open a private window in Safari using the command key and I'm unsure of what the up arrow before the "command N" is. I've tried numerous keys, including the up arrow and can't seem to figure it out. Thanks

What if everything I own is Mac but I hate Mac?

Do I still have to keep it to myself?

Well considering I've owned a Mac for 3 days I can say that's impossible!!!

Another question....Is parallels the best way to run Windows programs on a Mac? Is there a free alternative? I don't think I would use it enough to make it worth the $80 bucks a year it costs, as I still have my Windows desktop that I use. Would just be nice sometimes to be able to run a few Windows programs.

*I found virtualbox, is that any good?

Do I need an anti-virus on my Mac? If so, best free one?

The Up Arrow is the Shift key. If you would like to open a New Private Window, you will need to press:

Command-Shift-N

For future reference, this website should be a big help to you:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201236

I do not use virtualization software. But I have read multiple reviews, and most of them recommend Parallels over the other one.

Antivirus? I use this one that has spotted a few contaminated email attachments in the last five years:

Thanks Jigsaw. That up arrow key was driving me nuts and that shortcut page is great.

Well, the review said that Sophos was the best last year.

I downloaded and installed the Avira because the review said that Avira is now the best.

Thanks for posting the link to the review.

You should know that I'm a fairly recovered rabid Apple fanboy and will deal blatant Apple bashing accordingly.

I used virtual box at work a few years back and it was usable for office applications and a web application we were using but it wasn't fast and it took up a lot of space. I don't know if it has improved since then but it's worth a shot if you have the time.

set up time machine on a wd mycloud

our macs have always been incredibly slow at access the drive in general. We use it as NAS for sharing music, itunes, backups, etc. Macs browsing it take about 5-10 seconds between clicking a folder and the contents showing up, if they do at all. Windows and linux devices bring up everything instantly.

Anyhow, running time machine now. Takes several minutes per gb, such that 45gb backup is looking to be about 2-3 hours.

Some people are saying there's a load of stuff you can do on the mycloud to get it up to about 1gbps for time machine, but it seems like a huge hassle.

Oddly enough, my cloud didn't even work for a while there after some various apple change. WD had to issue a quick firmware patch to deal with their ****.

Why they gotta make everything so difficult?

Like, I was hoping just to backup pictures, so I got to my pictures folder. Where are the 800 photos I just imported? In the pictures folder? Nope! Apparently in something called Photos Library.

It's about the size of all the photos I'd imported, so I'm guessing they're all there. Wouldn't all move from preview (or whatever program shows photos on a Mac) to the photos folder, but I was finally able to extract one or two pics that I needed.

Serious pain in the ass though. Kinda like dealing with iTunes ever. But that's another rant altogether.

Ah nice a Mac thread , nice because I want to buy one but i'm curious how you guys experience using it as a poker player. I (almost) always play on my desktop, and i will in the future, but i will travel through Asia for the next 5 months and i want a laptop to grind on so now and then. But because i'm backpacking I dont want to bring a very big/heavy laptop with me. My problem with previous laptops is that they are pretty slow after a while when i start Holdem Manager. Is this a problem with the Macbook/Macbookair/Macbookpro as well?
When i'm back from Asia I obv. still want to use the laptop so now and then to:
- Download/watch/stream movies
- Use Word/Excel etc.
- Play poker on Pokerstars (maybe in future more sites) WITH using Holdem Manager
- Maybe bringing a GoPro and i need to edit the small video's into 1 video which will be a summary of my journey through Asia

So, anyone who is using a Mac to play poker on (with HEM!) share your experience please, thanks!

They are in that library alright, so yes, under pictures.
If you go to the photos library in Finder and right click on it, you can "show package contents." Essentially, the library is a folder with some additional magic.
In the package, you can browse to the "Master" folder to find your original photos. They are organized by date and/or name if you chose to give the moment/event a name.

If you do not like to use the Photos app, you can always import photos using the app called "Image Capture".
That one allows you to import media from an external device to whatever location you want to. You can also delete media on your camera/phone/ipad/whatever directly using that app.

Don't know about HEM, but would assume with bootcamp and windows you should be fine for that.

With regards to you videos question: Works fine.

Word/Excel: you could install Office on Mac natively. You can also use the built in Pages and Numbers (Apple's Word and Excel clones) if you can get used to them. They're included for free and are able to open Word and Excel files. You can also edit them and export those back to Word/Excel format.

GoPro and video editing: This might limit you to more powerful choices. Video rendering (called finalization in their world) needs a fairly strong machine to be able to do that. I doubt you'll find a MacBook Air strong enough for that. If you want to create large videos, a Pro might be needed.

The best AV changes about every 2 hours.

I'd go with one of the consistently good ones, priority on how much it catches and how little it drains performance.
Last time I checked (about 6 months ago), BitDefender scored high enough on all counts for quite a while. Isn't free, though.

Got the new keyboard and trackpad this week and am very happy with them, probably not worth the price for everyone but not having to use batteries anymore will be awesome.

How are the new keys? Aren't they the same as on the new MacBook?

I haven't typed on the new MacBook but a review I read say they are between that and the MBP keyboard, which seems about right, they are not as tall as my MBP's keyboard. Nice and snappy though.

I've noticed that Safari won't connect to certain cites sometimes? It's mainly Google or when I Google search (changed to Duck today) and it only lasts for 30 seconds or so but it can be annoying. Obviously this is happening on my Mac.

Never happens in Chrome on my PC and have done a google search at the same time on my PC and it worked fine.

Cool. Was gonna go pick up a mouse this weekend so I'll check it out. I tried the keyboard on the new MB and didn't care for it at all. If it's in between it should be perfect.

Returned a MacBook recently as neither the wife nor myself cared much for the keyboard, among other things.

Safari is buggy, I installed chrome and haven't looked back. Always got weird little errors even on fresh installed OS on either the iMac or air. YouTube sizing issues for example, none of which happens in chrome.
