If you can afford it just get the 13" MBP. It's an amazing computer and you won't be disappointed. Can get a refurbished one from Apple at a decent discount.

Using the built in mac mail app on my mbp and I've noticed that after a short while, maybe two weeks, messages no longer show up.

I am using 3 imap accounts, sorted into 3 smart mailboxes. Not sure where I can go to see the older messages. If I go to account Info to see space usage, I can see Sent mail from back before I ever had this laptop. Inbox says I only have 10 messages though on one account.

In the case of today, I literally watched it download several messages and then remove older ones. No clue why. Haaaaalp!

Is this POP or IMAP (and if the latter has it been switched from POP or is there a chance that you have a POP mailbox set up elsewhere, such as on a smartphone)? This sort of thing is to my knowledge what often causes these issues and you should be able to find a fix.

I'm assuming you've already checked the settings / preferences - many mail programs can be set up to autodelete or autoarchive after a couple of weeks, or indeed to only show emails from the past couple of weeks in order to minimise mailbox size (although that's more usual on mobile devices).

All imap. I have one that goes to my phone, the other two do not, and the one on my phone is set to imap as well.

I couldn't find any setting in the mail app that would archive or delete older messages.

Tried to delete the account and set it up again? Some serverside changes may not have come across correctly. That would take care of that.

So I had a WD MyCloud a while back that served as my main backup device plus iTunes library. It has been replaced with an Airport Time Capsule that, sadly, does not work any better with my MBP, and doesn't work at all with my Windows PC. Fun.

Anyway, my issue is this:

I have removed any links to the mycloud that I can find, but any time I connect my phone to my macbook and itunes backs it up/syncs it up or whatever, I get an error message that "there was a problem connecting to the server wdmycloud".

I am having no luck on google finding out how to remove an old device from os x or itunes. I can't find any links to it anywhere. I even cleared my recent "Go -> Connect to Server" history. Nothing helps.

Any thoughts?

Have you checked settings on the phone? It sounds like that is where the problem is. Are you backing it with a wire because of app programming or something, have you tried the wireless back ups to the cloud?

i don't back up anything to their cloud. Back it up via wire to itunes, and my laptop to the airport using time machine. Previously used the WD drive for time machine, but i was successfully able to remove all WD references from time machine

not any phone settings i can find related to how my computer uses phone backups or whatever

iPhone backups are just stored as a proprietary format single file on your hard drive. You really can't do anything with them except use iTunes to restore them to an iPhone.

But that file will be backed up to your Time Machine Airport. So, in the unfortunate case your laptop somehow died at the same time as your iPhone, you'd need to restore your laptop by pressing ⌘R when you reboot your MacBook Pro, restore from your Airport Time Machine, then when completed, attach your iPhone and restore it from iTunes.

I don't want to be using non-standard file formats. I've tried to move to RTF and Google Docs over time, but haven't made the full transition.

Should I bite the bullet and pay for an Office subscription? Go all online with Google Docs?
There are tons of free and open source programs that can open or convert MS Office docs and provide almost all the features. Look into Apache OpenOffice.

There are programs that let you examine the contents of iPhone backups made through iTunes, you can view text messages, media, contacts etc.

I built a nas using freenas which can support both Apple and windows using cifs and you can mount a time machine share with quotas. Been running for more than 4 years, only downtime was during a move. Lightning quick and responsive when browsing from either environment and achieves >100MB/s (yes bytes).

I've always toyed with the idea of owncloud or nextcloud but onedrive and icloud are just too convenient for me to prioritize the project. Optimize storage from iCloud is pretty good stuff as of late

my new tactic for the day:

sudo su; cd /; grep -lri "wdmycloud" *

Not sure if the star should be a period or not, we'll see.

It's now any time I try to even add a song to my phone. I can play songs in iTunes without issue. But with phone attached (and autosync disabled), any song added triggers it.

Rebuild library? Get a new phone and start fresh? Fire, and lots of it?

figured problem was either with iphone or itunes, and since itunes is a big steaming pile of **** i decided to monkey with it first.

Completely wiped out my library and readded everything. Took about 14 hours. Seems to not be giving errors any longer.

basically been using my macbook as a glorified iphone backup device for a while now, so I'm getting rid of it. I want to make sure I get everything off it before I wipe it.

I think I've found all the photos that've been imported from my phone. Got downloads and documents, though there's another area of basically documents that i'll have to poke around for. I tried my best to ensure this damn thing never stored any music on it, so I won't care if anything gets missed since it's all on an external drive.

Is there anything else I should look for? I'm sure there's something hiding in a nook or cranny that i'm not aware of and don't really want to miss anything.

no, I did not. We have 2 mbps. One for the misses, one for me. Mine is newer, so I just restored mine to her most recent backup. I'm sure that'll cause problems when we try to wipe hers and fresh install the OS to sell it.

Check out the list, it’s like 4 things long, mostly disconnecting Apple accounts from the laptop.

I already did! I’m more curious how licensing works in the Apple laptop world.

I just recently entered the world of Mac with an iMac 27 inch. I often go to nhl.com and rotten tomatoes to watch short videos/trailers. The videos load very slowly on the iMac and each one wants to play a 15 second ad and often gets stuck. My PC sitting next to the Imac doesn't do this. It loads videos right away with no ads. Any ideas on this?
