hi, my laptop was playing up so took it to get fixed, was quoted a price which was very high to replace the circiut board so just bought a new machine, the specs arent quite as good, my original was an i5 8gb ram and samsung evo ssd, it was really fast and nippy, this machine I bought yesterday has an i3 and only 4gb of ram and just a standard 5400rpm hard drive, in comparison it seems sluggish, would salvaging the ram and ssd from my old laptop and putting them into the new one so making it 8gb with an ssd see some performance increase or is just the processor is quite weak? also in regards to swapping the ssd from the old laptop to the new, is it just a case of taking it out and putting it then and all my programmes, files, settings remain etc, like duplicating the computer or do I need to do a fresh install? if a fresh install whats the best way to wipe the hard drive clean, I have a bootable windows 10 usb stick so thats no problem, thanks for any help/advice

also, just thought of something, would swapping out the hard drive void the warranty for the whole laptop? I guess I could keep the old hard drive and then swap them out of the laptop had to go back for a repair under warranty?

I don't know if it would void your warranty, but that's what I would do. Companies will cheat you out of coverage on warranties you purchase any chance they get, so give them the F stick too imo.

Your biggest performance bottleneck with that new laptop is your hard drive. 5400 RPM mechanical hard drives are becoming unusable for consumer grade computers imo. You'll probably be quite happy with that processor and just 4 GB RAM, but if the RAM in your old one is compatible, I would put the other 4 GB in if I could, but that's me. And that might void your warranty as well, who knows.

The drive swap should be doable. The RAM is less certain. What are the old and new laptop models?

it says max 12gb installable ram in the pc world specs but then on google it says the ram is soldered, does that mean u cant just slide another ram stick into a slot?

Your existing RAM is a no-go. Your Z50 uses DDR3L and your new system uses DDR4.

Buying a new 8GB stick to upgrade is a good idea if it is in budget.

thanks for the heads up, looks like around £30 for 4gb which would make it 4+4, theres no problem with different makes of ram working with one another is there aslong as they have identical specs? crucial.com says this is what id need

Usually, same specs RAM mixes fine (workstations and servers are pickier).
Crucial guarantees compatibility if you use their website tools, so its a pretty safe way to go.
Personally, I'd make the leap to 4+8, Win10 will use the additional RAM for caching etc. and give you a better experience.

ok, thanks, in regards to installing the SSD, when I put it in the new laptop then start the machine with the bootable windows 10 usb plugged in will that then delete the current windows 10 installed and let me do a clean install or do I need to wipe the drive first before removing from old laptop? hope that makes sense!

You should have the option to wipe the drive and install clean when you boot to the USB.
If you haven't already updated your USB to Creator's Update (aka RS2), you can use the media creation tool.

You may already be aware, but your license key is embedded in the system firmware so your new install will activate just fine.

just installed the SSD and a fresh copy of windows 10 with zero problems, the performance increase in speed is nice

After using an SSD for a few years now I couldn't imagine ever going back to mechanical hard drives for anything other than long term high storage capacity. Installing your OS and booting from it is out of the question in this day and age. I couldn't imagine waiting over five minutes to use the computer after I turned it on now.

Is your evo a Samsung 840 evo ssd? Those are known for data corruption and Samsung issued 2 firmware updates to correct it.
