How much are you willing to spend?
How important is portability?
How much in system storage do you need?
Do you intend to use this primarily at a single location with a docking setup?
Do you intend to game on the system?
Do you want to drive one or more external monitors?
Have you done your own laptop RAM or drive upgrades in the past?
Are you open to refurbs, or new w/warranty only?
OS preferences? (Win/Lin/Mac)

Thanks, G&C. I meant portability within the laptop class. There's a fair bit of difference between lugging an 8-10 pound Thinkpad W5XX workstation class laptop and tossing a ~3lb Surface into your backpack. If your device will primarily be used on a home desk and not lugged around all day, you can generally get more perf/$ in a thicker chassis model. A dock (dedicated or USB 3) may be worth considering as you can attach more than 1 secondary monitor and the size of the laptop screen becomes less of an issue. You also get additional ports which may be a factor as current laptop designs are skewing to thin with few ports.
I'll try to get a few examples this evening.

Edit: Win10 Pro isn't needed to utilize 16GB of RAM. You pick up some nice features (Hyper-V, etc) but Win10 Home will address and utilize 16GB RAM just fine.

You'll get more help if you specify the country you want to buy in and the currency of your budget. I mean, you're likely to be American, given you assume we all know what you meant, but who knows.

Thread is kind of dead so may attempt a hijack with similar questions.

Need laptop that can handle poker and HUD running and MS Office. Do most of my browsing on ipad. Will have in backpack on trips, but mostly at house, often connected to monitor. I've been looking at:

Lenovo Yoga 720 13" 8GB 256 SSD i5
or
HP Envy x360 15.6" 12GB 1TB i5

Thoughts on the better model for me or any recommendations that may suit me better are welcome. Not sure if SSD is necessary even though the perks seem nice. These are both in the $7-800 range.

i would get the 15.6 inch one but with an ssd. I had a 13 inch laptop and its pretty annoying how small multi-tabling is. So got rid of it.
