Re: New desktop

i just ordered a 3930k for myself..

In hindsight mega overkill.

But this is what we do. I like to have a comfortable office.

It wont need upgrading/changing for few years.

For poker needs.

i5 + processor. 2TBH and 120GB SSD. 16gb RAM.

And i like mine to be quiet.

Max @800ish..

Re: New desktop

Put the extra $$ on monitors. 2x dell 24/30"s instead.
580 GTx is also good GFx card that will handle all your gaming needs

It really depends on what you plan on doing with it, what kind of resolution you want to run games in. If you are not playing at resolutions higher than 1080p I think it's overkill yes. If you want to game at the full 2560x1600 you will probably need it.

Re: New desktop

gotcha. the sales rep at falcon recommended the tikki instead of the talon. he said the tiki was the "perfect system for anyone not using multi-GPU; size, noise level, and heat generation are all really good."

it is slightly cheaper than the talon and comes with a 3 yr warranty instead of 1, but the best processor I can get in the tiki is the 3770k and the only power supply option is 450w but I assume both of those are fine?

edit: its actually almost exactly the same price as the Talon with all the upgrades (same price as the millennium as well)

should I get 128gb or 256gb ssd?

also, is there any merit to not overclocking your processor? the computer the sales rep suggested wasn't overclocked...

Newegg has a 250gb ssd on sale for about $170 right now. I forget the brand but it has good reviews.

Edit: Kingston 240gb http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239046

128gb should be enough, but nothing wrong with going bigger, especially if you want to run a lot of games from the ssd or plan on doing video work or something.

Over clocking causes a lot of heat and power issues if not done correctly, it's safer not to overclock. It can also shorten the life span of the components iirc.

Re: New desktop

Yea, there isn't really a need to overclock. The CPU is already powerful as is and pokerGarden made a good point that it can shorten the lifespan of your components.

I used a 128GB SSD on my last build and I didn't have any problems with it, but I didn't have a ton of games installed. Just make sure that everything that is not a program (downloads, music, videos...) goes on your HDD. I wouldn't consider a 256GB SSD excessive though, but you can get by without it and without feeling like your strapped for space imo.

Re: New desktop

I just priced that out... that's a lot of markup. Do yourself a favor and don't ever look the parts up.

But you get a 3-year warranty and short of a component malfunctioning there's not much more you could have done. I vehemently disagree with the no-overclocking decision though. It's a $2500 PC with a CPU model specifically designed and marketed to be overclockable, in a high-end board. Of course you overclock that thing.
