Modem loop "No Internet Connection" / Request Timed out (10-15 second intervals) Modem loop "No Internet Connection" / Request Timed out (10-15 second intervals)

Hey,

I am staying at a hotel and they have had some weird internet issue here for as long as I know but normally it would fix back after reset / unplug of power cable.

If we would experience current shortage where modem would lose power for a moment it would either go into connection loop where I would lose internet for 10 to 15 seconds. Most of the times the yellow ! would not even have no time to appear over connection bars as the connection would be restored before, how ever if pinging through cmd it seems to give me 11 Request timed out's each time and then connecting back to net for quarter of a minute again and repeat.

Now for the past week we have had no current shortage but this issue did present itself again and neither reset or unplug of power cable seems to solve it this time. Or well unplug fixed it for couple of hours yesterday but besides that it seems to be effed up.

Internet provider technicians have no clue how to solve it either or well at least that's what they have been telling us.

I hope I described the problem alright, have any ideas, need more info? Shoot away guys, I really want to fix this thing. Cannot even fire up a single table, surfing like this is frustrating and playing turbo werewolf with cmd constantly pinging to know when you can refresh the page and expect results is no fun.

Genie.

Are you pinging the router or and host outside the LAN?

outside the LAN. (google)

All of the computers in the network are normally experiencing the loop simultaneously. On rare occasions desktop in the office which is connected via cable would have connection while others are looping.

Try to run a ping to your default gateway and see if it also timeouts

Default Gateway appears to give response even during the loop( no timeouts), pinging outside LAN giving timeout.

Might be troubles if your ISP gives dynamic IPs, it might not be able to renew the lease time. But if it was an ISP problem your service wouldn't be the only one and they'd have fixed it by now most likely. Perhaps it's a malfunctioning router

Well in this case not router but modem. Router seems to be working fine and we had a second one to test, the issue was same. And its only after modem reset/ unplug it would stabilize.

I did unplug the power cable and hook it back up and my net is fine now again.

This problem could be ISP just like you said and they are not bothering with it as its "acceptable". (Developing / Third world country) Now as you mentioned this I recall having the same issue in the apt I was renting before and having same ISP.

So I guess I will suggest to the owner to get a new modem, have more serious talk with ISP or simply changing them up.

(When we were experiencing this high loop and not getting it back to normal was during the week when place was packed. So there was a lot of different devices eating up the net. So dynamic IP's and not renewing lease sounds about right)

Thanks Marco!

I was hacking around in router and found the DHCP client table under LAN. On quick review I saw a bunch of phones connected.

I end up deleting each and every single lease there and the net working fine.

At that moment had 17 active leases, right now 7 and everything looks to be working fine. Seems like the limit comes somewhere around 15~ devices.

Is it possible that simple speed upgrade could fix the issue? Perhaps there is ISP restriction on how many devices could be connected at once?

Modem/Router is not capable of handling that many leases at once?

Edit: Obviously started celebrating too early. After 9th device got its lease, net started looping again. What should I assume from this?

Might not be related to that itself. Either way, check the DHCP server range, and atribute more IP's to the DHCP. ISP router should be oblivious to the amount of computers connected at one end, as your router changes the LAN IPs to it's outgoing WAN IP via NAT.

Range is 50 so there is plenty of room but anyway the problem is still here. Kinda driving me nuts to the point where I'm just thinking about moving.

I don't think its lease problem anymore because I can see that lease times update in the table.

More and more smells like some general ISP issue. But something triggers it, what I have no clue.
