LED vs LCD

Hello all.

I need a new tv for my average sized living room. I'm buying it this weekend at PC Richards because through because I get almost a 20% discount through my workplace. I already own 2 Samsung LCDs. So I walked into the store today to browse around and notice the almost all of the TVs are LED instead of how it was 1-2 years ago when I got the others when it was all about LCD. I ask the salesman what'sthe difference and why the change. He states that now its all turning over to LED and that's the way to go.

Is it? Any advice would be helpful. I was going to buy a 46" LCD 1080p. Kind of confused now

Re: LED vs LCD

LED = LCD lit by LED instead of fluorescent

When looking at LED tvs, there are two types
Edge Lit is lit from the edge (duh). This allows for an incredibly thin display at the cost of contrast
Back Lit is lit from behind the LCD, allowing darker blacks since LEDs can be turned off for certain pixels/areas

If I was getting an LCD I would get a back lit LED display. I would only get a traditional LCD if I was trying to save money for a display that didn't matter as much (like a guest room or office)

That being said, I still prefer the picture from plasma.

LED provided brighter and crisper colors, response time is usually sub 2ms, usually a higher contrast ratio, also they tend to run more efficiently and take less power than an LCD.

yeah heat & power draw is a big advantage of LED in everything. A plasma could consume 500W+ where a similar sized LED may be in the 100-200W range

LED TVs are also the best choice for bright rooms, since they can be uncomfortably bright if desired.
