Can connect to network but not internet? Can connect to network but not internet?

I seem to have a issue connecting to the internet from my laptop.

It works fine on my home network, but for some reason on BT networks i can connect to the network but not internet. I am running vista on the laptop fwiw and am semi convinced its the reason.

The laptop is a old acer but all updates are up to date etc

Now at my parents and this is the third BT network i have had a issue with

Have googled it and tried 2 or 3 things but its not cracked it or seem to be a clear answer....

ok good i thought i might have been the only one.

OP, once you expand on that you can try the following:

first, are you using DHCP for everything or are you statically defining your IP address / DNS servers / default gateways?

when you say that you cannot connect to the internet, what exactly do you mean? your browsers won't load web pages, your standalone applications (poker clients, etc) won't connect, etc?

when you are "connected to the network but cannot connected to the internet" try pinging: google.com and 8.8.8.8 and report the results (just whether or not the pings were successful is fine).

in a command prompt type ipconfig/all and see if shows that you have an IP address (probably like 192.168.1.x), a default gateway (probably like 192.168.1.1), and DNS servers (vary).

If you can't load webpages; shutdown your firewall (ZA/whatever) then try loading it up. This is what my issue usually is as sometimes it won't go even though I have the browsers on allow.

(what others have said, what does can't connect to internet mean--all programs, or just webpages or what?) This matters to how we can help you fix the problem.

Bump this still having same issue.

Not used laptop in about a year.

The issue i think is windows vista, i can connect to the interent but have limited connectivity via wifi.
Webpages wont load at all, fwiw i have turned off firewall and all anti virus programs and still doesnt work.
Routers reset repeatedly and still does not work.

If i connect directly with a ethernet cable i can get full web access.

From some google research it seems to be something to do with encryption for a network.
This makes sense as when u connect direct i think no password or encryption is used.

However all the supposed fixes seem to do nothing.
Seems really odd that apprently so many people (from google) had this and no fix has been released.

My only thought is to upgrade to windows 7. Not ideal as laptop is just a back up for poker should my pc go down.

Any help thoughts appreciated. (posting on phone as no web access obv)

Thx

Do this and report. It makes a big difference if you are being served an IP or not. Also, I would look in your properties of you connection and select TCP/IP and then hit properties. You should either see that you are getting an IP dynamically (in which all of the fields will be grayed out) or static (in which it will let you put something in the ip fields)
