Laptop keyboard stopped working

Acer 5253 laptop. Everything works fine except the keyboard. It worked fine... Unit went into hibernation and when it came out by opening lid keyboard will not respond. Touchpad and buttons work fine. What to check?

Re: Laptop keyboard stopped working

Anything get spilled on it? Should just be a small ribbon cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard. Could have come loose.

do the caps lock/num lock buttons have lights on them?

It would *probably* disappear from device manager but not positive.

Hard power cycle the computer. Remove charger and battery and wait 1 minute.

Plug in both and turn it on. Try to get into bios (usually either F2 or Ctrl+Alt+Esc on Acer)

I agree that loose ribbon cable is most likely bet.

Often keyboards are fairly easy to replace/reseat. Typically it involves removing the bezel from the area between the keyboard & screen and unscrewing a few screws to remove keyboard. Ribbon is usually underneath keyboard. You can find a service manual for your laptop online to find specific instructions.

Replacement keyboards are typically <$40 on ebay

Re: Laptop keyboard stopped working

Took a look online and keyboard is very easy to remove, just seated/snapped in. Going to pull it an reseat the ribbon cable, eBay OEM keyboard is 15.99 so that is cheap.
Ill try to power cycle and check caps/num lock.
What would i look for in BIOS or am i just testing to see if keypress works then?

Re: Laptop keyboard stopped working

if you can get into the bios via keypress that is a good sign. I also try stuff like caps and num lock to see if the lights will come on. keyboards are rather easy to replace once you know the trick to how your model is held in.

Re: Laptop keyboard stopped working

Cannot get into BIOS.
Removed keyboard and re-seated cable.
Still not working.
Opened device manager, keyboard is there and it says it is working properly.
Uninstalled keyboard and restarted system.
Keyboard recognized and driver resinstalled.
Still not working
Cap/NUM do not toggle lights.

Keyboard bad? Why is it still recognized?

Does a USB keyboard work? If you toggle caps lock on USB keyboard does it change the built in keyboard?

I'd say keyboard bad is most likely and replacing it would be my next troubleshooting step.

Think of it like a car in the driveway that won't start. You know it's there, but you can't use it.

Does it change hte numlock/capslock lights on built in keyboard
Are the lights part of the keyboard itself (like built into the caps/numlock keys) or are they in a separate part of the laptop?

AH, no it didn't change anything , lights dont appear to be part of the keyboard, but didn't see where they might be as nothing comes on or goes off.
I ordered a new keyboard. going to see if that works. If not then the issue may be much bigger.
Few day before it arrives. Ill update.

Re: Laptop keyboard stopped working

Forgot about the thread, but it was in fact a bad keyboard..18 bucks form amazon, took literally 2 minutes to remove and install the keyboard.
This model the keyboard is simply pulled out of the"tabs" that hold it and snapped back in after you connect the ribbon cable.
