Just BUILT* my first computer -_-

As title suggests I just built my first computer or basically have.. there's still 1 piece to come in this afternoon then Ill be installing Windows 8.1 today.

Although I've read the stickies there seems to be so many programs to choose from I'm wondering what this community personally recommends I put on my computer before even using it?

Anti-virus you like?
Apps to theme your desktop like Rocketdock?
Firewalls?

Just wondering what you guys personally do to your machines because I've never had a custom built like this so it's sort of uncharted territory for me!

Thanks

use ninite to install all the programs you want/need at once
https://ninite.com/

for free anti virus i like Avira. it rates as one of the highest free antivirus and it has minimal spam. I used to like avast for its user friendly interface but there are way too many pop ups on the free version.

windows comes with a firewall so you dont have to worry about that.

Don't forget you have to install a ton of drivers (motherboard mainly) after installing Windows. So don't be disappointed when you start the machine that the graphics isn't right yet etc. There should be a CD/DVD with your motherboard.

Oh really? These r the types of things I'm so clueless about..

All my previous comps have been prebuilts and i basically just plug and play lol.

Should definitely be a learning experience for me..

After installing the drivers, you should then download the latest drivers from the manufacturer of the motherboard / graphics card / etc. There are a lot of performance improvements and bug fixes in the later releases.... even if you buy the motherboard on the very first day it is released, there are nearly always updates to the drivers available.

Also, Windows Update is your friend... ensure you always have the latest updates installed.
