Java Virus? Java Virus?

10-25-2014 , 01:20 PM
Every time I open a new tab a pop up appears telling me to install a Java update. Sometimes it happens right when I open a page and sometimes it happens after a couple of seconds. Whether I close the box or just let it sit, something called setup.exe starts to download. The next time setup1.exe starts download, setup2.exe, etc. Sometimes I can just reload the page and everything is fine. But sometimes it just happens over and over and won't let me get to the website I want.

I don't think it's a browser (Chrome) issue, since my homepage hasn't changed and there are no suspicious extensions.

I've ran malware, spyware, and Security Essentials and it still continues. I'm not 100% sure what Java does, but I'm thinking of uninstalling everything and downloading the newest version from their official website (the website this takes me to is NOT official. It's something with a bunch of letters beginning with 's'.

I've never had this type of virus before and would appreciate any help.

Thanks

The malware sticky. It exists and you did not see it.

First off, the sticky is from 2011 and I wasn't sure it's up to date. If I was a thorough enough person to read and systematically follow steps, I probably wouldn't be having malware problems, because I'd be more careful to read about what I'm clicking on.

Also, I only asked if this could be a Javas virus. As in: I've never heard of a Java virus. Has anyone else?

In short: If I knew enough about computers to know what an OTL log is, let alone how to provide one, I wouldn't need to come here for help. I'd have already a working understanding of computers and know how to prevent, diagnose, and get rid of malware that craps out my computer.

You take your computer knowledge for granted and forget that there are people like me who barely know how to turn one on, let alone provide logs and instructions for how to remove viruses.

Edit: I also think we went through this once before where you accused me of not reading the sticky. Then as now I thought I did provide enough information. Specifically, I described the problem and explained the pop-up situation. I do not yet know if it's rogueware and not sure if I need to follow the instructions in step 4.

Well, billions of devices run Java so I would have to say its certainly possible.

Given the website isn't official, I'd say you have a problem. Not being a tech guy, I don't know how to help you.

Those are the requirements indeed for producing an OTL log.

If this is too much for you to handle, you need a techie with physical access to your computer or taking remote control and run some diagnostic tools.

And they aren't hard steps to follow.

I guess googling is beyond you (Lestat), too.

I did Google and didn't find much on it. I really just wanted to know if this was a virus. Or at least a common virus that anyone here was familiar with.

I guess I misunderstood what I thought was the main advice of the sticky. To post a detailed description of my problem and not just some vague "Helpf I think I have a virus!". I guess the main advice is to download from a link and start posting OTL logs.

But yeah. To be honest, that's a pain for me. If I can't get rid of it through the advice of someone who already knows how to get rid of it, or by using the malware removal programs I already have, it's easier for me to simply wipe out my hard drive and re-install the OS.

Sorry to put anyone out. I just thought someone may have already been familiar with this and could tell me how they got rid of it.

Thanks. But seriously... I am dumb and lazy when it comes to computers, but not completely dumb and lazy. I did the same Google search before posting here. The problem is my symptoms are not quite what I see described. I'm also having trouble following the directions to uninstall the programs some of the links suggest. That is to say, they either don't exist in my program file log, or the ones that DO exist that I'm pretty sure shouldn't be there like SAver, etc., will NOT let me delete them.

That sent me in search of uninstall programs, etc. So before I started going through all that, I decided to post here to see if anyone had the same or similar problem with a Java Virus.

Yeah - I've seen java viruses first hand. They come in all different flavours and have different symptoms.

IMO, the malware sticky that Gabe is pointing you (http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/sh...82&postcount=4) to is the best way to check and clean your computer. The instructions are pretty easy to follow.

Java is a common infection vector in PCs.

That said, what you've experienced sounds to be a browser hijack, or similar - the fact that it's dressed up to make you think you're downloading legitimate Java updates doesn't mean it's a "Java Virus" (whatever that means).

Anyway, giving it a fancy name makes no difference. Point is that you should follow the steps in the malware sticky and post your OTL logs here - that will almost certainly result in Gabe giving you a couple of further (quick and easy to follow) instructions that will clean everything up.

Alternatively you could replace the frankly awful Windows Security Essentials with a better antivirus product, and scan with that in the hope of sorting it out yourself.

I ran the OTL and it's not allowing me to post it, because it's too many characters. I don't know what the custom sans/fixes box is or where to find it. Can someone help me out?

Thanks.

Reread the instructions for posting the logs.

Since you are no further interested in my services, as made perfectly clear by your PM, I suggest you take your problem to a geek site like majorgeeks, bleepingcomputer or geekstogo, you will find malware helpers much more friendly than me.

On 2+2 there are no other people (I am aware of) that can read OTL logs

I am sorry if I offended you

If someone else has the same problem I can pretty easily explain exactly what I did to get rid of it in a few lines. Might not be the right way to do it and maybe it comes back, but so far, so good.

It would be useful if you could post your solution here. If someone searching finds the thread they're not then going to want to wait for you to reappear to answer their prayers (even if you do remember what you did in a year's time, etc).

I am not sure, but I think you just said my post was six characters too long.

After re-scanning with all my anti malware software, uninstalling all suspicious programs, deleting all unfamiliar browser extensions (none of this worked by itself), I went to Internet Options - Advanced - Delete Personal Settings.

This might not be the correct way and (I suspect) may not have deleted the virus entirely and be just a temporary fix. But so far, I have not had any pop-ups whereas, I was getting literally every time I opened a new tab.

Reread the post for an understanding of where the exchange he's talking about took place.

My bad then. I meant to imply that it was 38 characters too long.
