Hi,

In our house we have 2 internet connections from 2 different providers. Internet connection A is basically working fine for everyone. However, internet connection B is giving problems for some of us, but for others its working fine. The only difference between the computers that are working and not working that we're aware of are that it's not working properly on the computers with windows 8.1 running. The others (for whom both connections work) use windows 7. The problem of connection B is as follows:

Every time when I go to a new internet page, I get the message "server not found" and I have to refresh the page at least 1 or 2 times before the page is working. The strange thing is that I cannot recall that this was happening from the beginning when we just got connection B. From what I remember it was working fine for at least a few weeks. This could have something to do with the fact that in the beginning I was probably the only one yet who was using the new connection.
Another "strange" thing is that when I've just connected to internet B, it works fine for 1-2 minutes and after that I'm constantly getting the cannot find server messages.

Also, I'm using Firefox, but the problem also occurs in Chrome/Internet explorer. And it happens both with cable connection and wifi.

Any advice on what could be causing this, and how to solve it?

Cheers

Try changing your DNS server.

These are for Open DNS., which I recommend.

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
208.67.222.220

Hey, thanks for your response!
It looks like changing the DNS server solved the "server not found" messages. However, the connection is very unstable now, being connected/disconnected every other minute or so (and when connected, very slow). Also when it's disconnected its still "partly" connected, like shown below:

Where skype cannot connect, but the internet icon shows that it is connected.

Using these settings:

Apparently including the pictures in the post didnt work, so here are the links:

What is your bandwidth (MB/s) on connection B and how many people use it simultaneously? Does your Win8 machine have similar problems on connection A? Have you tried restarting the router/modem for connection B?

The problems dont happen with connection A, and have restarted the router+modem multiple times. I did however reset "winsock" which appears to have solved the problem. If the problems return I will report back here, thanks for your help!

Is there any benefit in keeping the DNS changes (assuming the winsock reset solved the problem), or can I change them back to my standard settings?

Here's how to reset winsock, for people that have the same problem: https://iihelp.iinet.net.au/support/node/261

Yes there are benefits. You were probably using your ISP's DNS servers, which can be slow and can fail to resolve host names (twoplustwo.com for instance) to IP addresses, just like your server not found issue. They also have security features that ISP DNS servers probably do not have.

Thanks for posting your resolution. I've seen lots of people on different forums post "I fixed it!" and then it's followed by people asking how, with no response. It's a nice courtesy for future readers what you did, cheers!
