OK, so my computer (a pentium 166) is showing some strain handling what I want it to do, and I'm trying to figure out what I need in a new computer.

I currently have the computer plugged into my stereo system and my 32 HD LCD TV. I watch TV through a TV card, watch DVDs and play itunes and poker from the sofa and have the computer and old PS2 under the TV. Internet conection is wireless.

In future I want to :-

1. Play DVDs/Blu-ray DVDs/music/ occassional games and watch TV on my TV/stereo set up.

2. Play poker on either TV or laptop/dedicated monitor, depending if GF's around.

3. Mess around on internet on either TV or laptop as above.

4. Have it all simple and nice and non tech-complex. I want things to basically just work.

5. Occassionally do some video editing type stuff, but very basic.

As I see it, my options are basically,

1) Get a PS3 and stream computer stuff/TV to it from a new quality laptop. I have no idea how to do this.

2) Buy a new computer with bluray drive, HD graphics, big HD drive, fast processor for media centre use etc etc and a (probably fairly basic) laptop for other use. I guess I might even network the two together, though I have no idea how to do this either.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the latter. With a budget of £1000 or so, is this feasible or sensible, given my needs? If so, what sort of specs should I be looking for? Also, one option might be to do this for a free laptop as it's not much more than I'm paying for Broadband now
