Help: I believe I may have contracted a virus! Help: I believe I may have contracted a virus!

I clicked on a video from a Bing search engine thinking it was safe but a popup came and my web of trust alerted me immediately the popup may contain malware and other bad things.

I saw the sticky in this forum but I see that it is outdated since it was made in 2011. What steps should I take? Both Malwarebytes and antivirus came up empty. Thank you!

The information in the sticky is still good. I use the majority of those tools frequently.

That said, malwarebytes is awesome and depending what AV you used, if both came back clean you would likely be OK.

Is reformatting computer really necessary because of a potentially bad popup? Cmon now.

As long as you didn't interact w/ the popup, and nothing showed up in your malware checks that looked bad, don't sweat it. Proceed to live your life.

If your not sure that you really have a virus and you just want to make sure that you dont have one.

Follow this steps.

1, go to safe mode(with network)
2, update and run malwarebytes ( if you detect a malware/virus and you cant delete it download file assassin and use that to delete the file, just be careful because file assassin Can delete system files )
3, Run CCleaner and clean cache and registry
4, In "msconfig" or CCleaner startup menu , delete/deactivate unwanted or unknown startup program.
5, restart computer.
6, start PC normally and run malwarebytes again just to be safe.

Hope it helps

PS- if the file infected is a system file, reinstall or use the repair option from your OS installer.

There are several things wrong here, lets start by swapping 2 and 3. And just using MBAM is quite meh

If you do 3 first, there is a big chance that the virus inputed in the registry will just replicate it self after cleaning it.

how come we must run in safe mode? does MAB not work as effective in regular mode if there is a virus?

When you run your PC in safe mode, your PC Only turns on/activate the required programs to run your OS.
it is a precaution just incase the virus was program to auto-run when you start-up your PC.
