so a while back when hotmail changed to be more like gmail, i noticed i was having issues with my outlook client and hotmail. Their changes made it really difficult to get hotmail messages delivered to outlook, so I eventually just removed the account.

Fast forward a few months and I realize I don't want any non-web-based email accounts. We change ISPs pretty regularly and I don't think it's a good idea to be tied to one, so I go through and systematically change every non-web email thing I'm signed up for to a web-based one. I've had some of these old non-web addresses for like 10+ years, so I'd accumulated a fair amount of stuff I'd signed up for.

I was glad when I finally got to remove any shortcuts to email clients, but then I couldn't help thinking: this was all thanks to microsoft changing how hotmail worked. I no longer need an email client, like Outlook, thanks to microsoft. With google docs and open office, I didn't really have a need for word or power point, so they, MSFT, effectively removed the only thing that could have got me to buy their office suite. Thus removing the only revenue stream from me to them.

Well done.

Probably even money that you'll have Office on your machines within 10 years. It's still the default for bidness. Google docs is fine for internal documents but I can't ever imagine sending a google doc to a customer you want money from. Same for the various open offices. May depend on who you work for and who your customers are and how customer facing you end up being, but I'd be surprised if the shop you got hired by didn't use Office. You may not pay for it again, but you'll be back...

hey, if it's not coming out of my wallet, I don't really care. I'm more in it for the personal morals of the thing.

Any mac users having issues with chrome lately, or is it just me?

Seems like a lot of javascript and other such things are screwing up lately. Example, I can't use imgur anymore. Not the plugin, the actual site. When I hit upload, I just get a blank box that never finishes loading.

Works perfectly fine in Safari, just not chrome. Lots of other sites with interactive things don't work, like the links in photobucket, and other non-photo-sharing websites as well.

My bank website was throwing scripting errors any time I clicked anything for a while there, and now only throws scripting errors when I try to log out. Though, my bank website is always a bit behind on the times so that could be them.

Okay, looks like the outdated, broken imgur uploader plugin was the culprit. Removed it and everything is working just fine now.

The thing that is pissing me off about my Mac at work these days is that is stopped autofilling in passwords and the box to have it autofill passwords is grayed out. Very annoying but fortunately it is only the work machine and not my home machine or other work machine...
07-07-2016 , 09:38 PM
work machine? use a password manager? Shouldn't even need to pay for it if you're not using another device type
07-08-2016 , 04:19 AM
We're using 1Password for teams which is nice but not as nice as the browser autofilling in the passwords. It gets tedious to go into the Safari preferences to dig out a password I have no idea of because I let Apple pick it in the first place.

Imo if you have a lenovo laptop sell it back to them for a much or little as you can and run in the opposite dirrection. Btw, Lenovo support is actually called Lenovo no ** idea spastics who'll archive your complaint before resolving and ask you to then make your complaint again *(1 month), who'll send a courier to pick up a laptop that isnt from the company whose bag they sent you, who lie saying windowss will be installed from the motherboard so you don't need instilation cd's when specificaly asked, then have to wait months on end for cds to arrive after it took months on end to get a HDD sent, who cannot resolve a pc issue in 2 years and who sell a computer that breaks after 2 months. Just don't and save yoru self the hassle. Sell it asap to Lenovo, because no one deserves to have to bare this companies BS. Oh yes, and who do not honour warrenty and extended warrenty that you pay for claiming it is not issued if the user can fix the issue, even when expressly told "the user cannot and is not able to fix the issue and is not willing to" they still refuse. Who have no idea who you are as a customer or complaints you made or even what your last phone call was regarding, and only know you from the laptop number under the battery. Just see posts on Lenovo anywehre online to see that they are abismal as an organization and in customer service and product quality.

Does anyone know why Udemy brings my computer to a crawl? It's fine until I log into a course I'm working on, but then it slows down everything to the point where I can't do anything.

I just PM-ed kerowo to get rid of the malware sticky. OTL hasn't been updated in 4 years, nobody uses RKill anymore and frankly my knowledge has been obsolete for a couple of years.

Fortunately the modern WIN versions aren't compromised as easily and as thoroughly as was LOLWINXP and virus help threads are getting pretty rare.

And I will do what Gabe wants! If anyone else wants to take a shot at a new malware sticky let me know!

built new pc, having two possible issues:

1) hotmail will not stay logged in. I thought maybe it was because lastpass's password was getting overridden by an old password in chrome, but I deleted all the possible passwords from chrome that might be at issue. It no longer displays an incorrect password half the time, but it still won't stay logged in.

It's obviously a fresh install of chrome, and i have never had "clear cookies on exit" or anything similar enabled. No other email or site does this.

2) Not 100% sure my memory is configured properly for dual channel mode. The manual for my board says:

Quote:
The four DDR4 memory sockets are divided into two channels and each channel has two memory sockets as
followingj:
Channel A: DDR4_2, DDR4_4
Channel B: DDR4_1, DDR4_3
which leads me to assume I should put sticks in slots 2 & 4. However, Those slots are right next to each other, and they don't match in color. If you look at the manual, you'll see the order on the board is 4, 2, 3, 1, and the colors are dark, light, dark, light.

Sure makes it seem like 4 & 3 should be paired as they're both dark in color.

I've tried CPU-z or something to see if it's in dual channel, but the program doesn't tell me anything. Also checked the bios, but not seeing anything specifying it's dual channel or not.

Any thoughts?

also, it appears my brand-spanking new GTX 1060 is sparking about a half inch to the left of the power connector. It's slightly discolored from it happening 1+ times.

Not sure the best play there.

hotmail will also not stay logged in using firefox in linux. Starting to wonder if it's the ad blocker I use. They've had complaints on their page about ad blockers for a while now, wondering if they're taking their war against ad blocking one step further.

Do you use any extensions that block cookies? If so, you might want to adjust the settings to whitelist login ones.
08-12-2016 , 11:19 AM
Not afaik. Only uBlock Origins, which worked fine until I put it on my new computer.

trying to figure out why my monitor looks so washed out

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

went through some of this, but it's oddly complicated, and tough to test given where my monitor is in my house.

Someone needs to make a website devoted to appropriate color/contrast/gamma settings for all the various monitor brands & graphics cards

I may have forgotten what it is you really wanted. At this point I'm thinking all of the stickies are out of date and should probably just be destickied and closed.

Isn't it a function of each individual monitor being slightly different? Isn't that the whole point?

Like, if every monitor of a given model was literally and perfectly identical, it seems to me that the manufacturer would just callibrate all of them themselves.

My wife is a one-woman company and received an invoice that she couldn't open. So she asked for help. It was in zip file from some dropbox location and when I unpacked it, it was an executable. So I asked: do you know the sender? She said "no". So then I knew it was ldo a trojan.

I scanned it with malwarebytes. Clean. I scanned it with the virusscanner. Clean. Then I submitted it to Virustotal and it had a score of 10/62, indicating it was ransomware.
So I was looking at the file I thought: I doubleclick you and all my stuff is encrypted. That was a bit creepy.
