I'm not sure if this is the right thread but does anyone know of any reliable and free SMS services from PC to mobile phone?

Google Voice.

On Win7, looking for two things:

1. Something that'll let me make windows always on top (so I can pin a netflix window AOT)

2. Anything that'll handle transcribing a dictated voice memo in an mp3 file. I'm sure the machine transcription will be crappy. Doesn't bother me.

free > cheap > $$$, but any options are worth hearing about.

Thanks.

thx, but I don't use smartphones and the songs I want to identify are just background electronic music in some youtube videos, so it's not like I can sing it and some software will recognize it. I would have to have the software recognize the song from a file either on the internet or my hd.

You can text from your email. Each provider has it's own domain, so you can email/text to something like 3105553456@verizon.com

I had a search around in response to this post and found a number of possible ways to do email to SMS with Orange phones in the UK, so far these have failed to arrive when sent from my Hotmail account:

number@omail.net

0number@orange.net

there is a 3rd option

number@orange.com which hasn't yet arrived on my phone but is not showing as failed in my inbox.

Has anyone got this to work?

Antivirus
The following are free Antivirus programs that are commonly recommended. All three have realtime scanning features. Remember to only choose ONE Antivirus program to be running all the time.

AVG 8 Free
- probably the most well known free Antivirus and it's a decent alternative to the paid stuff.

Antivir Personal
- Another decent free AV. Has higher detection rates than AVG although there is a nag screen that pops up everytime it updates.

Avast Home Edition Yet another AV. I haven't used it myself but many people recommend it.

Antispyware/malware
These are standalone scanners that can be run manually.

Malwarebytes Anti-malware
- MBAM is a great tool for detecting and removing some pretty stubborn infections.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free - Another good free AS scanner.

Firewall

Comodo Firewall - If you find Windows firewall to not meet your needs, this free alternative is certainly more powerful and configurable... to the extent that it can be annoying in the beggining. Remember to only have on firewall running at one time.

Office

OpenOffice.org - This free open source MS office alternative will more than likely meet your needs. Has a spreadsheet, database, presentation, and word processing program.. and more.

Instant Messaging

Pidgin - Open source IM program that supports a ton of protocols. Even if you just use AIM I would consider switching. Pidgin has no adds, no bundled software, has a cleaner and lighter interface than AIM 6.

Miranda - This ultra light and versatile IM program is highly customizable and is a good alternative for those who don't like pidgin.

Browsers

Mozilla Firefox - Obviously. Most people have already heard of this one, but it's important to list it here.

Apple Safari

Opera

These are all arguably better and safer than Internet Explorer.

Image software

Paint.net
- Open source alternative to MS paint. Has ability to work with layers and many other features offered by expensive alternatives.

Gimp
- Open source photo manipulation tool. Very powerful tool. See the link provided for more in depth description.

Assorted Software

Quicktime Alternative - Quicktime is awful software in my opinion. Quicktime Alternative is just as it sounds, an alternative.

Virtualbox - Free virtualization software (like VMware or Virtual PC). It's not as full featured as VMware but it gets the job done easily. If your looking to get started with running a virtual machine try Virtualbox. It might suit your needs while costing you nothing.

Foxit Reader - Adobe Reader is another piece of software that I despise. This light and free PDF reader gets the job done with none of the BS that comes along with adobe reader.

ATF Cleaner - Simple temp file cleaner that requires no installation.

Rocketdock
- Want a cool dock menu like OS X has? Here you go! Fully customizable and many skins available.

I'm sure there are more I can add but I think this is a good start. Feel free to add your thoughts and suggestions.
SORRY TO POST THIS ON YOURS BUT THIS WAS A GREAT POST AND I WANTED TO ADD TO IT. THANKS.

(Windows)

Your forgetting a free program that beats all. (If someone brought it up sorry didn't feel like reading all the posts)

Search And Destroy

Search and Destroy is ... to the home of Spybot-S&D©®, the best (according to PC World, PCMag.com, ...) privacy software available!

and a little perk that can save you so much trouble is the Tea Timer. The Tea Timer will alert you when ANYTHING is trying to change your registry files.

I hope everyone uses Firefox if not I can explain why it is better then Internet Explorer.

WOT is a firefox addon that will prevent you from going to the wrong website. Search anything on google and it will show you Green Dots for good sites and Red Dots for bad sites. And with an account you can rate sites. Highly recommend it.

WOT

I know that it works in the states, but unfortunately I cannot test it for anywhere else.

Have you tried contacting the cell phone company to see if they have a solution? If they do use one of those addresses then they should have info for you.

It probably won't help you much, but I was at a presentation of the developers of http://www.sonarflow.com/ and they said their program could do that. I didn't test it myself yet, if you do, let me know if it works!

Edit: Just tried. Apperently it's still beta and doesn't have all the features yet.

+1 for Miro. Only problem is that it doesn't seem to allow batch conversion.

What about a free tool that converts .m4v files to either .avi or .wmv?

Thanks

IIRC, I was using this on a Win7 netbook (now back to Vista laptop, works fine there too; dev says full functionality only on XP): http://www.thewonderfulicon.com/download.html

TWI is a tray icon with easy always-on-top/normal/hidden window toggle.
