Computer fan causing lag? Computer fan causing lag?

11-20-2009 , 08:48 AM
The fan on my desktop computer has been running non-stop lately and it seems to be causing a huge performance issue. I tried shutting off the firewall anti virus, basically any program that seems to use a lot of memory. My firewall is COMODO and the anti virus is AVAST! When I reboot I have the same problem. Would the fan constantly running cause the computer to lag? Occasionally the fan will stop and the computer is quiet and all programs are fast.

I'm sorry if this seems like a dumb question about the fan/lag problem, but I can't figure it out. Also, I tried Googling for the topic and couldn't find anything in regards to my exact problem.

Thanks,

CP

I had this problem with my laptop once and I tried everything before I saw that my fan had a lot of dust in it. After I cleaned it the computer got silent, cool and didn´t switch off anymore.

Thanks. I'll pop the cover off and check it out. Highly appreciated.

The fan is probably running because your cpu is busily doing something and therefore generating heat. That doing something is also causing your lag. I don't use windows, but I think you can see what processes are using cpu by looking in the task manager.

probably some kinda cyclical thing. The CPU is running extra random processes and gets hot, the fan runs more, the fan gets full of dust, runs hotter, makes the CPU hotter, CPU runs slower. Clear out the case and fans.

Took off the cover and WOW. All vents and 2 fans were full of dust. Took out the handy Shop Vac and cleaned it out. Computer has been running 6 hours and never been quieter and running fast and smooth! Thanks for the help!
