If you want to run a file you are a little unsure about is it possible to do this is in sandboxie or some similar software or is the only option a virtual machine?

SB should be safe enough as it runs the file in an isolated environment, AFAIK. Make sure you scan it with your anti virus software before that, just in case.

I didn't see it mentioned anywhere in this thread, so I'll add that to make KeePass easier to use in Firefox there is an add-on called KeeFox that you can install in Firefox that will automagically fill in password fields for you using your KeePass database (if it is unlocked, otherwise it prompts you to open/unlock it).

But how do i open a single file in Sandboxie, like a doc or a video?

Another thing:

PUB.Casino infection according to malwarebyes
and
[.ShellClassInfo] LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell 32.dll,-21787
which opens randomly by itself in notepad

Is nothing to worry about according google. Right?

Yeah +1 to this. There's also the same thing available for Chrome:

Im thinking about buying a new computer.

I have followed OP on every point for years except the encyption and
I havent had a single problem with infections.
I am very grateful for that.

And i will ofc continue doing this on my new laptop.

From a security point of view is there any difference buying
this PC

Acer laptop

(Its in swedish but its one of the better laptops - i7, SSD, 18.4" etc)

or buying a macbook pro
17 ", 2,4 GHz Quad-Core, Intel Core i7, 4 GB 1333 MHz

If I install windows on the macbook pro i assume there is no difference between the two with regards to safety.

But if i dont install windows is the macbook pro more secure?

Also; Is it possible to run the safety programs in OP on OS X Lion?

And is it possible to run the necessary poker programs like
HEM, tablescanner, the poker clients - Ipoker, Stars, Ongame, SvS, party poker etc?

As an antivirus I strongly recommend Avast. It's good and it's free for home edition.

Thoughts on PasswordMaker? Basically it uses the website URL and your "master password" to regenerate your passwords on the fly using a one-way hash algorithm. It sounds like a pretty good way to get strong, unique passwords for every site you use - it's essentially unhackable since there's nothing stored (the passwords are simply regenerated every time you need them), which also means there's no password database you have to maintain, worry about syncing on various devices, etc.

Here's one article listing a few potential negatives - http://securology.blogspot.com/2007/...with-urls.html - although in the comments they mention that at least the first weakness has been fixed in recent updates.

Well I've been testing it out.. it works pretty well and I definitely like the idea, but it's a huge pain in the ass updating old passwords to work seamlessly with the browser plugin. Plus different sites have such different password rules that you can't really use the default settings for most sites, meaning you actually would need to sync the settings file across all your different machines to have access everywhere. Overall though I like it enough that I'm going to give it a go.

Seems like if you loose the program for whatever reason you're no better off than if you lost the master password to a password safe.

The short answer is that it creates a secure connection that encrypts information you send over the web. So, for example, if someone wanted to intercept your password on a public wi-fi network they would get information that needs to be de-crypted before it can be read. This is almost impossible to do and keeps your accounts a lot more secure. If it was not a secure website then a potential hacker could be able to get your password in plain-text (i.e. not encrypted). You can tell if a site is secure by seeing if it begins with "https" as opposed to unsecure sites that use "http."

Just set up a master password for firefox. The problem is, when I close all windows and then reopen, I'm still logged in to my gmail account! If someone gains access to my computer, all they would have to do is go to gmail.com and they would have access to my account. Isn't this what the master password is supposed to prevent? I don't understand why it's not working...

It's working correctly. You need to actually click "sign out" when exiting gmail and uncheck "Stay signed in" on the gmail login screen.

followed your advice and got Avira, just not sure which is the best to get, free one, £17 or £34

http://www.avira.com/en/for-home

Im on the Anti Virus premium trial atm which is the £17 one but which do you think is best for when the trial finishes?

Great thread btw!!!

Edit: not sure i need the last 3 things that the £34 provides,
Protects your privacy in Wi-Fi hotspots
Backs up your files automatically
Monitors your children’s online activities

So basically is this worth the £17 Fee,
unlimited access to security experts
Guards your accounts against phishing

Thanks

Hey guys,

What router of these days would you recommend ? I'd personally prefer a cheap one with NAT, but I'll give credit to your suggestions.

Really good info.
Just started playing poker full time and was searching for exactly this

Doing step1 now : How about "Last pass" instead of "keeppass" that is mentioned in the OP.

https://lastpass.com/misc_download.php

Can anyone explain if Last pass is better/worse than Keeppass ? It looks to me like the former has more features than the Keeppass.
Also when the app creates a password and remembers it for us and it is stored only in our PC , suppose I go somewhere else and use a relative's PC to use my emails , how do I get the password? What if my comp gets corrupted somehow and I have to format it?

Thanks

PS : Just bought Kaspersky internet security 2013

I like LastPass a lot. It is an acceptable substitute for Keepass. However, you should try to avoid logging in to your accounts on computers other than your own. Friends and family computers may not be as diligent about computer security. And NEVER use a public computer.

HI,
Thanks for the info.. Yes, I will try my best to use only my computer (desktop) ,
but just in case , I need to use email/money bookers / do net banking from a relative's place , how do I do it if the respective account has a last pass strong password like eg : " #35$jsohusk;pUIJKl%^.lL " .
Is it possible to log-in from any other computer ?

Also I might buy a HTC one x+ and last pass support mobiles for 1$/month . I also pay bills, etc from mobile phone. (The reason I prefer Last Pass).

I'm planning on upgrading to Win 8 with start menu . Does all these security features support 8?

Thanks a lot

Is there a way to figure out if your PC can be compromised via open ports?

I am using a secure email for my ewallet and just had a skype call with a poker player.
2 days later there was a failed login attempt on my ewallet.

I find it very very strange with the timing of it and the fact the email is kept private.

Is it possible he could have got into my PC via an open port?
(I think its possible he could have got my IP address during the skype call via CMD commands).

I have ESET anti-virus running at all times and windows 7 default firewall.
