It took us ****ing 3 hours to build, and was a huge headache but I'm supper happy with it now. And I knew SSD's were fast but holy **** this thing can restart in like 7 secs or less....

Sooo the CPU cooler that I got did not fit the mobo . So had to use the stock one. Other than that very happy. The case is great, it has great air flow and this this is beyond quiet.

Thanks for providing pictures. The boxed cooler is fine, I have the same CPU running with it no problem. I think I read somewhere the the Haswells don't get as hot as the Ivey Bridge CPUs anyway.

So happy I made this thread. Didn't know what PSU I had and this was easier than opening the case up.

I still have exactly this PC/Monitors, and am looking to upgrade the GPU and Monitors. Going to get either a GTX 1070, 1080, or 1080 TI. I will need a bigger power supply as I still have the 500 watt one from this build. I think the case will have enough space to hold any of those three cards.

I also am going to get 1 MG278Q and 2 PB277Q monitors. All of which are 1440p the MG287Q is 144hz and will be the main monitor.

I only ever plan on gaming on the main MG278Q while having youtube/spotify/light web reading open on the others while gaming.

So couple of things, anything else you feel I should upgrade as well, like the mother board or ram?

Also is a 1070 or 1080 enough to get 144hz on the main monitor and browsing and whatnot on the others at the same time? I get that if I only had one monitor it's prolly enough but it will need to push out all the extra pixels and maybe some youtube stuff at the same time. Or do I need to get a 1080 ti? Mainly playing Overwatch, SC2, Hearthstone and in the future some cross compatible Xbox titles prolly crackdown who knows what else.

I assume the CPU won't bottleneck this at all either?

what exactly is wrong with your current system that makes you think you need to upgrade? you're playing seven year old games, browsing the web and your current card runs three monitors already

The left most monitor goes in and out under heavy work load wile playing games or watching more than one thing on youtube at once. Also high res for gaming also 144hz also more poker tables on one monitor also larger monitors also basically as future proofed as I can be GPU wise. Also one seven year old game and it'd be nice to have higher refresh rates and higer res on Overwatch. Also.

Why do you think you need a bigger power supply? The TDP for your GTX 760 is 170W (and nVidia recommends 500W minimum). The TDP for a GTX 1070 is 150W (and nVidia again recommends 500W minimum).

You will need to make sure that you have an 8-pin power connector available instead of the 2 6-pin connectors used by your 760.

The reference card for the 1070 is a full inch longer than the 760, so do open your case and check that there will be space.

TDP for the 1080s tho?

Pretty sure either the 1080 or the TI needs at least 600. And it seems like if I want the MG278Q to get up to 144hz on any graphically intensive game I need at least the 1080, and prolly need to have it overclocked.

And I think I'll have just enough space in my case for any of these cards fwiw. I think I have ~1 inch left.

180W, minimum PSU recommendation 500W.

The Ti is a different beast: 250W/600W.

Obv would like to not have to buy a new PSU. Will come down to what price the TI is vs the 1080 when I pull the trigger it looks like.

OK, so other than the PSU which needs an upgrade does anyone think that adding a 1080ti would then make the CPU bottle neck on some games?

is your CPU running stock or overclocked? you can bump it up some, and tests generally shown not that much of a difference vs high end CPU when gaming - your GPU does most of the work anyway

I have 3570K @4K paired with 1080, Witcher 3 and MEA ran on highest settings without a hitch. I have 16GB RAM though

It's stock, but I had just read that maybe the CPU would bottle neck games at 1440 144hz even though a TI should be able to run games at those setting on ultra.

Yeah maybe I need 8gb more ram to be safe.

I'd suggest buying the GPU and PSU first and seeing if you're actually CPU bottlenecked. Usually I'd suggest going ahead with the RAM upgrade right away, but if you end up deciding to replace the CPU and mobo you'd be moving to DDR4 and not be able to reuse the RAM purchase. If you decide you find you're not CPU bound yet, I'd suggest putting the money into 8 or 16GB more RAM and an SSD upgrade. If you're board has an m.2 slot with PCIex4, a Samsung 960 evo m.2 drive would be a good choice that can be migrated forward to your next build.

I have a ssd that the os and some other small things sit on fwiw. Its a good samsung evo from when ever this thread was created. I'm almost 100% sure the ti would work with my current mobo and yeah I'm kinda stuck with ddr3 ram on this pc for 8 more gigs if I want.


Some of the time I should just go ahead and build a new one really.

As long as the CPU is good still I'm already gonna get a ti and PSU, not getting AMD anything fwiw, and the price to get a new mobo and 16gb of ddr4 prolly isn't that much more really unless I'm missing something. The case I have now will work fine too.

Your processor will bottleneck a 1080 alot of the time (GTA V) at 1080p, and some of the time at 1440p, so I don't see a reason for a 1080TI especially playing Overwatch, which as I understand is not very intensive on graphics card. The 1080 runs it ~120 fps depending on your cpu. If you don't care about the extra $200 so much go ahead, but you may be better off upgrading to a series 7 i7 w/ a 1080.

Don't forget that you get a lot of features with the new 7 series platform ... booting from NVME, usb c, usb 3.1, RGB lighting of course have to have that.
