MSI GT70 $1,569.00

This is a little over my budget but it seems too good to pass up. Are there any major cons I'm not seeing? I don't care about the weight. I just want to be able to lay down and move the laptop when I roll over.

Is it for poker only or are you going to play games on it?

Hey Poseidon, I want it for games. I don't even see the graphics card in the info but it's a Geforce Nividia GTX 670M. It checked out okay.

I should hold out for the 4th generation i7 though.

What, Haswell? That's probably a year out and then some, and it's way too early to know if it's any good.

Possible cons:
  • The 670m is nice but basically a rebranded 570m, and the GTX 680M just launched Monday night. And if it's near as good as it looks on paper it's the only one you want in a rig of this cost today. Well that or the 7970m which is cheaper.
  • It's going to be loud and/or hot.
  • Needs a solid state... okay, you don't "need" one for a gaming system, but a slow 7,200 rpm drive would seem a bit out of place with all of the high-end stuff in there. Not to mention heat.
  • 16GB RAM is burning money a bit in a gaming system.
  • I know you said you don't care about weight, but damn. Any more and you might as well just glue a monitor to a desktop case and call it a laptop.

I thought 750 GB 7200 rpm Hard Drive Solid-State Drive meant it had one but yeah, I want one. I'm going to buy something this Saturday so please let me know if you see something you'd recommend. I care more about processor/graphics/temperature than memory, storage, screen size or weight.

The Samsung 830 is $200 for the 256GB version at Tiger Direct right now. For decent 120/128GB models you can find some off and on for $100-$110 - the 830, or Crucial M4, or a handful of others. Just check Slickdeals most days there's something on sale.

Thanks for the info, Gonso.

What do you think of Asus gaming laptops? With the vents in the back. How can I get a decent gaming laptop for $1500 or less? It's around $2000 when I customize on xotic PC with no upgrades. The 680M adds on $450. Can I buy SSD/graphics card and install them in an older laptop (Sandy Bridge?)
