Hey

I am looking to buy a new laptop and was wondering if I can find a decent one for less than $500 and where might I be able to find these. I started searching myself and got some laptops but they seem pretty weak.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

It all depends on definitions of "decent" but for the most part Natty's right, sub-500 notebooks aren't going to be very powerful.

If you are looking for something to browse the internet, write documents, listen to music and do all the standard stuff... finding one shouldn't be too hard.

I guess I should explain what I want it to do

I am looking for one to basically browse the internet
Play one or two tables with no lag
Type up my school work
and play online games at Kongregate

I don't play pc games and I won't be making movies or anything like that

Also if I get one with windows Vista is 1Gb of ram enough

1GB would run OK but you should really consider bumping it up to 2GB. You can buy RAM from crucial.com

Would I have to install it myself? Because I don't even know where to start on a laptop

Yeah you would. If you google around you can find info on how to install it.

I bought a used circa-2004 ultraportable (Toshiba Portege R100) for ~$300 off ebay, and it was totally fine for browsing the internet, watching poker videos, and playing lite 2D PC games during my bus commute.

PS: At least, it was until the hard drive died. Now I'm looking at spending ~$150 for a replacement 1.8" HD and ~$150 for an external optical drive (how else can I install XP on the new drive), which makes my cheap purchase not so cheap.
