Why do we hold our breath when we lift weights? Why do we hold our breath when we lift weights?

Not without losing some stability in your torso

Martial artists, tennis players, boxers, MMA fighters...ALL breathe out when they're at their maximal exertion points.
They grunt. This provides a short-term maximal tightening in the torso. While they are technically expelling a very small amount of air, this is clearly different from the "breathing out" you are recommending.

They are using this technique for performance enhancement, not some misinformed idea about blowing a blood vessel.

Badminton. I was in the top 32.

I could squat 500 with no huge problem. I had a back issue that prevented me from doing more, though. In a seated squat machine I could do over 900 for reps.

there is no such thing as a seated squat machine.

aka seated hack squat (not the standing variety). I have no polite way of saying the obvious here: you have no idea what you're talking about.

there is no such thing as a seated squat, for the same reasons there is no such thing as a seated one leg stand.

i assumed you are referring to the leg press machine, ie something like this: http://www.technogym.com/gb/viewdoc....get=commercial

if so, the mechanics of the movement are different and there is no weight supported by the upper body so the abs are cut out of the equation: they are not meaningfully comparable to squats. if not, link?

also i am gonna call you out as a liar for your claim you could squat 500lbs. at best you are not lying, just deluded that a 2 inch curtsy with 500lbs across your back counts as a squat. given you dont appear to know what a squat actually is, this is possible

Ding ding ding. Maybe your core wasn't tight enough to protect your spine?

Video of you squatting or I don't believe you can squat bodyweight, so ****ing clueless.

And maybe they were 100% unrelated and you have zero idea what the medical conditions concerning my back were. I had to work extremely hard on my core just to be able to carry around a backpack. The fact that I could eventually do squats of 500lbs is a testament to that. Furthermore, I was doing a lot of work with balls; for example, doing up to 240lb squats standing on a ball. 70% of my time in the gym was working on my core.

ok not going to pile on and maybe there's a linguistic community for whom that's a seated hack squat, but that's an incline leg press machine

You hold your breath because you're stressed and worried and holding your breath gives you a feeling of control and calm amidst the steel pressing on your flesh.
