Actually I'll make it easier. Find a video of any Olympic weightlifter doing any lift while breathing.

I'm a certified personal trainer. You know what I did to get certified? I paid a few hundred bucks, lol'ed my way through a ridiculous book full of injurious exercise practices like breathing while lifting, and took a test. I passed it by suggesting the worst exercises possible, and enforcing horrible form. It was like a game, where to win, you had to try really hard to lose.

Being a certified personal trainer means absolute dick. The odds of slipping a disc/getting a hernia during a squat are thousands of times higher than having a stroke. Your suggestion that doing something natural and completely proven among elite lifters will make you 'blow a blood vessel' is why people view personal trainers as complete jokes.

Have fun making minimum wage at a big-box gym and injuring people.

This is why I quit being a personal trainer...because I got lumped into the same class as the fools to which you're referring.

I had 2 years of kinesiology behind me and I take my information from journals and studies...not some stupid personal training handbook.

Nice ad hominem, though.

I like how you feel high and mighty yet provide no proof other than anecdotes yourselves.

Yup...zero 'proof' constitutes argumentative domination. I guess you're a creationist?

You are supposed to breath out on the exertion of the lift, and breath in on the negative. Ask any body builder or power lifter and they will tell you this.

No they won't. Body builders might though.

also our argument is derived from basic logic ie

"doing something that will relax your abs is really stupid when you are lifting heavy stuff, the reason being that your abs relax"

this seems like circle reasoning. Anyway, your "core" is the weakest part of the body in a purely mechanical sense because the solid structure consists of only the spine. Thus to reinforce the spine during heavy lifting it is imperative to facilitate a good transfer of power across the region without endangering the spine itself. This is accomplished in the human body by the abs which keep the soft tissue tense and relatively rigid, breathing during the lift can and will affect the rigidness of this region and thus increasing chances of lift failure or worse injury due to lack of stability.
Not to mention the fact that loosening the abs causes a less rigid system leading to potential injury in other regions because of it.

Breathing =/= relaxing the abs...ducy?

You activate what's known as the pelvic floor, the transverse abs, obliques, and the rectus abs...you can still use your diaphragm during this!

what?

the abdominals are used for expiration. the diaphragm is used for inspiration. do both please.

not to mention a ton of muscles assist in inspiration, mostly to move the rib cage. i would argue that's detrimental during any structural lift.

yeah what mi101 said. i never said breathing = relaxing abs, just that it necessarily follows in this case.

axel, it wasnt circular reasoning, it was a tongue in cheek poke at the fact that we all seem to agree that relaxing your abs is a mistake when squatting, yet some how durkhead hasnt shut up yet.

And not ONCE have I advocated relaxing your core...but this is not mutually exclusive with breathing out.

Martial artists, tennis players, boxers, MMA fighters...ALL breathe out when they're at their maximal exertion points.

relaxing your core is indeed not mutually exclusive with breathing out.

The implicature is that maintaining an activated core is not mutually exclusive with breathing out...nice try though. I guess that you have trouble following a conversation.

that wasnt implied by the words you actually used, although i worked out that was what you meant anyway from the other crap you have said ITT, and then implicitly contradicted it by using the exact same words you used. i could do this because you ****ed your sentence up. this isnt actually important, but you are so anal and pigheaded that it becomes tempting to do.

fact is breathing relaxes your core from maximum tightness. you may not have been recommending relaxing, but you were recommending breathing, which necessarily involves relaxing.
Why do we hold our breath when we lift weights? Quote

No, it does not require relaxing...that's flat out false. Try it: go for maximum tightness in your core...now see if you can breathe...surprise, you can!

I have a few questions Durka:

What sport were you a national level athlete in and what was your rank?
What do you consider as being heavy squats (or other lifts for that matter)?
