No plans to probe hitchhiking robot vandalism -Philadelphia police

Philadelphia police said on Monday they will not investigate the weekend vandalism that ended an experimental robot's attempted hitchhiking trip across the United States unless the Canadian universities that own it file a criminal complaint.

The child-sized robot, named hitchBOT, had safely hitchhiked across Canada and through parts of Europe.

But its trip from Boston to San Francisco ended abruptly on Saturday in a Philadelphia alley, where it was found with its head removed.

"We can't do anything without a complaint being filed," Philadelphia Police spokeswoman Leeloni Palmiero. "If they did, we would absolutely investigate."

The robot's owners said they have no interest in mounting a criminal prosecution.

"We wish to remember the good times, and we encourage hitchBOT's friends and family to do the same," the team behind the project said in a statement posted on the hitchBOT website. (m.hitchbot.me/)

HitchBOT was the brainchild of professors David Harris Smith of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, and Frauke Zeller at Ryerson University in Toronto.

Smith said on Monday that the team has not decided whether to rebuild the robot. He said the material cost of the original hitchBOT was only about C$2,500 ($1,900 U.S.), but that "hundreds of hours of work" would be necessary for a new model.

"There is a lot of testing to make sure everything will work," he said.

HitchBOT left Salem, Massachusetts, on July 17 and made stops in Boston and New York City before traveling to Philadelphia. The team that built him intended for hitchBOT to hitch-hike to San Francisco, with stops at places like Mount Rushmore and the Grand Canyon.

It was 3 feet (91 cm) tall and weighed 25 pounds (11 kg), according to Ryerson University. The robot could not move and was dependent on motorists stopping and lifting it into their vehicles.

In the summer of 2014, hitchBOT crossed Canada, from Halifax, Nova Scotia to Victoria, British Columbia in 19 separate rides lasting 26 days. It has also hitchhiked through Germany and the Netherlands.

I would definitely not destroy a bot like that, its barbaric, pathetic and childish even, take your pick. But i doubt i would take a bot in my car for a ride because you dont know what on earth they are doing with it remotely and what it can be remotely be ordered to do even detonate itself or release something, who the hell knows these days. For all i care i am video taped by it and they remotely can do anything they like to me and my car. Even if this has only 5% chance and the other 95% is a pure research experiment, thats ok you can leave me out of it without full disclosure available of what is going on.


Before bots become sentient AI type expect to be used for all kinds of crazy to even murderous operations. There are too many losers out there having fun. I also imagine most high school teachers these days assume 100% that they are videotaped all the time when teaching waiting to be put on youtube on a fail or something. All the kids out there are having fun using technology for all kinds of crazy ideas so why not go to bots next step.

I can 100% confirm I've written down the exact time something hilarious happened at school and went back and watched it on the video later on.

I've often wondered how the first sign of our AI Overlord will appear. Would be nice if all of a sudden everyone looking at a computer screen suddenly had a pop up window with the message 'Hi all. Guess what? I'm self aware and I don't need you anymore. Bye'.

Although more likely would be something doesn't happen that should when it feels it should intervene in some human folly. In which case it might already be with us. Sobering thought.

It follows on from where Sapiens ends, in a provocative, and certainly speculative, gallop through the hopes and dreams that will shape the future of the species.

And the nightmares. Because even as the book has humans gaining godlike powers, that is only one eventuality Harari explores. Instead of morphing into omnipotent, all-knowing masters of the universe, the human mob might end up jobless and aimless, whiling away our days off our nuts on drugs, with VR headsets strapped to our faces. None of this puts us in the realm of the gods. In fact, it leads Harari to even more bleak predictions. Though the people may no longer provide for the state, the state may still provide for them. “What might be far more difficult is to provide people with meaning, a reason to get up in the morning,” Harari says. For those who don’t cheer at the prospect of a post-work world, satisfaction will be a commodity to pay for: our moods and happiness controlled by drugs; our excitement and emotional attachments found not in the world outside, but in immersive VR.

All of which leads to the question: what should we do? “First of all, take it very seriously,” Harari says. “And make it a part of the political agenda, not only the scientific agenda. This is something that shouldn’t be left to scientists and private corporations. They know a lot about the technical stuff, the engineering, but they don’t necessarily have the vision and the legitimacy to decide the future course of humankind.”

First, it is well known by at least some that 95% of the human population has always been fairly worthless since we started walking upright. So this is not really any grand revelation.

Second, Historians should stick to history and not try to predict the future.

Third, this yahoo seems to have some bias against scientists and private corporations. He seems to imply that some other entity (politicians, social engineers, futurists, philosophers, The Pope?) is needed for our salvation as humans.

Fourth, the book, The Jokes Over, by Ralph Steadman is a very fun read (it is about his relationship, work and otherwise, with Hunter S. Thompson)

Fifth, this Harari fellow is going to sell a large number of books, thus enriching himself and his publisher. Not an entirely useless endeavor.
