There is so much irony in this post I don't even know where to begin.

I graduated from high school in Virginia in 1983. Even though back then there were only one room schoolhouses with no electricity, my biology teacher did a damn good job teaching evolution. He even calmly and rationally refuted the "objections" to evolution put forth by some dumb Christian (please excuse the redundancy) kid.

It really depended on the teacher, and probably still does.

God forbid that kids be taught what their parents want them to be taught. Public schools don't exactly teach 100% accurate info either.

Yes. Children with parents who are not trained and educated in science should not learn science from their parents. That is what schooling is for.

Re: US schools teach about Loch Ness Monster.

lol if you think that elementary school teachers are "trained and educated" in science. 95% of teachers just read out of the text book that they are teaching.

Kids are taught totally false things in school every day by the government school system. I'd rather them be taught false things that their parents want taught to them then false things that the government wants to teach them.

Care to give examples of the totally false things children are taught in public school?

What could be that way off like not teaching evolution? Only totalitarian governments could get away with something like that.

Re: US schools teach about Loch Ness Monster.

A lot of US history is portrayed quite inaccurately. Mostly the economic parts (wars being good for the economy) and parts about the government saving us (FDR) and what not. I'm sure there's tons more but that's my specialty so that's what I know for sure.

What makes anyone think that some random government official knows exactly what and how kids should be taught is beyond me.

I love it when people who have zero idea of what the dept of ed actually does say idiotic things like that last sentence. If you can name a single area or topic where any mysterious faceless gubmint official has dictated the curriculum, I'd be interested in hearing about it.

And I'm curious to know how your two examples aren't logically contradictory. If war is bad for the economy, and new deal social programs didn't end the depression, what magic did?

Re: US schools teach about Loch Ness Monster.

I simplified it geez. I'm sorry insert "a lot of government dept of education people." I'll be honest and say that I don't know how the entire education system is set up. What I do know is that the decisions are made by government employees. Statement still stands.

The magic of (somewhat) free markets fixed the economy. You don't need anything to pull you out of a depression. Markets and people automatically adjust and rebalance themselves. Money and people flow to where they are most useful, wealth is rebuilt and more credit is introduced allowing more economic growth. You don't need anything in particular to "fix" a depression.
