Tube illusion:rectangle or circle? Tube illusion:rectangle or circle?

Here's a fun illusion created by a mathematician that you guys might enjoy. No trick mirror or fake video was used. These tubes are shown as themselves and also as a reflection in a mirror. Are the tubes truly rectangular or truly square?

Look at 0:15 and 0:24 and you'll see the answer. They are neither, and the real object and the mirror image are quite similar at that point. The rest of the video is there for trying to get us forget about that.

Nice of him though to show the texture of the object seen from an "unintended" angle.

I haven't really thought about that in a mirror you actually see things from an opposite angle, nice op.

So is one side higher than the other. i.e. the overall shape of the object is a trapezoidal block (like a runner's starting block) rather than a rectangular block? As far as I can tell the ripple pattern on top is symmetric from side to side. So to see one side differently than the other would be explained by views of the top at different angles. However, I can't tell from frames at 14 or 24 that this is the case either.

You can find 3D models on thingiverse if you want to look at them from other angles or if you wanted to print one up.

Cool. From this angle for a single cylinder, one side is slightly higher than the other and the curves are not symmetric.

Click on the small single cylinder image below the large picture.
