Simplicity in mind what would your time vs money formula look like?

Temporal discounting model is asked about itt for no reason.

Definitely have no plan to live past 70. Adjust money flow (acquisition/spending) accordingly so at 70th birthday money = Zero*. Also Mark Twain's 70th Birthday Speech is worth reading.

Adjust the 70 number to fit whatever personal plan fits your current agenda. Don't make it complicated, write the sequence of numbers from 30 to 70 and drop them in a hat. Pick one. Go for it and don't hesitate. If life were serious no person would have any chance of being run over and squashed by a laundry truck. But that just ain't so.

*Or be in debt to burden family and friends, for the added pleasure of sweet revenge.

WTF the 70 is the new 50! At 70 many here would be still cool people to hang around and have fun.

What are you talking about Zeno (unless you mean no financial plans as mocking "responsibility approach" due to inherent life unpredictability)? You will make a great 70 year old with many decades left after that when there. Think of what you can plant and cook from your garden and the beers you can have with it alone as 1/100 of the fun things? What took your mood so down to say that?

Nothing is new under the sun. If you read The Bible you wouldn't be spouting such nonsense.

In the interest of making a better joke than my first post in this thread, I'm willing to compromise and toss age 80 into the blender. I'll need a new penis however to make it worthwhile.

Stoics are never down - it is always even keel, with sunshine and rainbows and lollipops.

Popsicle sticks and some tape would work. Lollipop sticks could work for some, I guess.

I read a beautiful story on Reddit the other day.

A lonely 78 year old man, wife passed away a few years ago and on the verge of ending it all. To escape momentarily and pass the time, hes playing the new game - Destiny - online. Encounters a generous young gamer in the game and they strike up the most unlikeliest of friendships. The old man is overcome with gratitude and joy for the young gun taking the time to teach him the ropes; show him the artistic beauty of Destiny and get him competing at a higher level. The old man, against his initial bitter view of gaming, has found a very fun reason to stick around.

There is always something new under the sun.

Old person finds something to do that invigorates them to stick about the planet for x more years. This is an old, old, old story. Moses probably heard it too. Replace Destiny game in your story with bocce ball, horseshoes, bridge, chess or reading the Bible or ad adinfinitum. It doesn't matter, it is sill a threadbare story, trite, and so mundane that I find it odd that you posted it.

Alan Watts syndrome, perhaps. There is nothing new under the sun.

Online gaming did not exist for the majority of this guy's life. Destiny was only made a few years back. Replace this with anything you mentioned and the story doesn't hold anymore.

Online gaming and Destiny were precisely - the something new under the sun. In my old age (if I get there) I'll likely have fully immersive virtual reality to play around in.

Unfortunate you didn't enjoy the story as much as myself. Understandable though, I didn't exactly tell it as it was, merely the cliff notes.

Cynicism is very old too and under the sun but it has always been DEAD to me and will remain eternally so hahaha! A ton of things older people can do that is completely new and impressive and motivating so i salute them and my parents first!

It's a game. People have been gambling and playing other games for at least 4,000 years. For a whole host of reasons. There is nothing new under the sun.

Makes life fun and interesting.

More accurate to say: Only variations on the same old theme.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. -Ecclesiastes 1:9 (KJV)

Fair fair. Variations on the same theme.

Then again you have Heraclitus "No man ever steps in the same river twice"

======

The philosophy of Heraclitus is summed up in his cryptic utterance:[39]

ποταμοῖσι τοῖσιν αὐτοῖσιν ἐμβαίνουσιν, ἕτερα καὶ ἕτερα ὕδατα ἐπιρρεῖ.
Potamoisi toisin autoisin embainousin, hetera kai hetera hudata epirrei
"Ever-newer waters flow on those who step into the same rivers."

The quote from Heraclitus appears in Plato's Cratylus twice; in 401d as:[40]

τὰ ὄντα ἰέναι τε πάντα καὶ μένειν οὐδέν
Ta onta ienai te panta kai menein ouden
"All entities move and nothing remains still"

and in 402a[41]

"πάντα χωρεῖ καὶ οὐδὲν μένει" καὶ "δὶς ἐς τὸν αὐτὸν ποταμὸν οὐκ ἂν ἐμβαίης"
Panta chōrei kai ouden menei kai dis es ton auton potamon ouk an embaies
"Everything changes and nothing remains still ... and ... you cannot step twice into the same stream"[42]

Indeed, and I have always enjoyed that saying. However, I modify it to: No man ever pisses in the same river twice. Adds panache. And a dash of chauvinism that Chez would appreciate.
