Re: SMP Video Collection

Funny, I just discovered that Zuke696 guy the other day, and his channel has dramatically increased my procrastination quotient. Lots of good stuff there.

Also, I don't think this TED talk has been mentioned yet (much to my surprise, because it's so good):

David Deutsch on Our Place in the Cosmos

I've listened to that talk maybe a dozen times, and it seems to get better, and smarter, every time.

i absolutely love talks like this, i really don't think there is anything that interests me more than hearing about new ways of thinking about information and how we express it.

Yeh this was great, wish it was longer. I love anything on evolutionary psychology or medicine. Pretty much anything with evolution, as anyone could probably tell from my posts in this thread.

Here is another great series on Darwin that is running right now. I am sure this same youtube account (TroisVitesse) will continue to post the episodes as they air.

Darwin's Dangerous Idea - Part 1: Body and Soul (1/6)

Darwin's Dangerous Idea - Part 2: Born Equal? (1/6)

Also just FYI to anyone. If you have noticed the free tree of life poster advertised at the end of BBC shows on evolution/Darwin, it is only available in the UK/Ireland. I already tried e-mailing them but they told me they could only put me on a waiting list in case they started distributing them worldwide.

I respect that others enjoyed this but i found it as uneducational, borring, and basically 7min of nothing with 30 sec of book-plugging to cap it off.

If he would have went into some detail and said somthing new i would have enjoyed it ... but this is just my opinion... maybe i just didnt like his beard idk

Stephen Hawking: Master of the Universe (Part 1 of 10)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&h...&v=YxxbXgo7IVw

"This two-episode documentary from the UK's Channel 4 is both a portrait of Hawking and an attempt to explain his work to non-scientific types. It conveys the basics of quantum mechanics and the theory of relativity in an easy-to-understand manner and does very well to acquaint viewers with Hawking's extraordinary life and character."

He was career Army, started as a Ranger and did a stint with Delta Force including Blackhawk Down in Mogadishu before moving on up and becoming a Lt. Gen. (he spent his last 15 years at the top of the COC for special ops). He is the silliest, most good-natured person I know but he can survive in the wilderness for a week eating bugs and kill people with his bare hands. He retired in 2000 and began contracting with the Government to do anti-terrorism training for ludicrous sums of money, so he seemed like the perfect person to ask about this.

He says he's going to watch it on his flight to Vegas tomorrow and let me know what is legit and what is sensationalism. Here's the interesting part:

He told me unsolicited that the military-industrial complex does indeed hold the single largest influence over the U.S., including (according to him) congress, the entire White house, etc (he told me a ton of stuff but I won't get into here). As we had a few more beers, he started to loosen up and told me that there was a group of 3 high-ranking officers groomed and picked by Eisenhower to prevent an outright coup after the war. Those officers hand-picked replacements, who hand-picked replacements etc. etc. He told me that he would need 2 hands to count the number of times that handful of people has prevented the U.S. from actively trying to take over world (not like Pinky and the Brain but think WWIII but at the end we dont even pretend to give the countries back). Apparently there has been a list of countries we need to occupy at the first opportunity, and this list is modified as different threats emerge but no country is ever taken off that list. That is, all of the countries that we wanted to occupy to stop the spread of communism are still on the same list of the countries where extremist Islam is a problem. He is going to go deeper into it supposedly when he's back in town, but he did say that in 50 years it is likely that we will stop just leaving bases in countries and return to outright colonialism.

Sorry to ramble on and on my mind is just blown right now.

def. not thats why no names/locations and I probably won't go too much further except whatever he says from the video is BS. Just thought it was interesting that there are so many places that all we are waiting for is available resources and a reason to convince the public.
