I lately found out that they recently decided to remove the headgear from amateur fights, as they found the concussion rate was higher with headgear as opposed to none.

This got me thinking of the weight and padding of the gloves in terms of Newton's second and third laws.

Then I found this video where they test barefist vs 4oz vs 8oz gloves for the force generated. Except they seemingly take only one sample of each. I'll be wearing 16oz gloves. The 12's seem ridiculous. I haven't tried on the 16s yet.

Boxing gloves distribute the force over a larger area. That matters to the face, not the brain.

I'd be begging to wear the 16 oz gloves ASAP if I were you. You need to get used to them.

Why then does MMA produce so many more knockouts on good connects while in boxing some guys have chins that can take almost anything?

Concussion != knockout.

See any average Irishman about being unconscious but on your feet.

It is all about torqueing the brain. A hit on the front edge of the chin maximizes torque. A big old mitt that hits in the chin and a lot of the rest of the face doesn't cause the torque. Levers, man. It is always about levers.

You see knockdowns in boxing a lot though. Except, they get a standing count. You can view those knockdowns in boxing as KO/TKOs in MMA as the MMA opponent will jump on the downed opponent and finish the fight via referee stoppage.

Which leads to the argument that MMA is arguably safer than boxing, giving that a boxer takes a substantial amount of blows to the head more than an MMA fighter does during a bout with longer rounds. Factor in then that an MMA fight also involves grappling and submissions.

I'm more of a fan of the technical aspect of fighting than anything. Like Nelson Mandela.* I especially enjoy Olympic boxing with 4 rounds and the objective is to outpoint more so than knock their head off.

*"I did not enjoy the violence of boxing so much as the science of it. I was intrigued by how one moved one's body to protect oneself, how one used a strategy both to attack and retreat, how one paced oneself over a match," he wrote in his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom.

It's in BBV4Life

First, need to promote the self-started forumserver.twoplustwo.com/62/bbv4life/disco-dance-etc-thread-1299726/

Edit: switched to 25 posts per page for being able to listen in these heavily youtube-embedded threads, for some reason 40 ppp isn't low enough anymore for smooth action.

Be true to thy own self.

I like that one. No need for a credit check or other 3rd party reference.

As Mike D put it:

Be true to yourself and you will never fall.

Take care of yourself first, he counsels, and that way you'll be in a position to take care of others. There is wisdom in the old man's warnings, of course; but he repeats orthodox platitudes with unwonted self-satisfaction. Polonius, who is deeply impressed with his wordliness, has perfected the arts of protecting his interests and of projecting seeming virtues, his method of being "true" to others. Never mind that this includes spying on Hamlet for King Claudius. Never mind, as well, that many of Polonius's haughty, if not trite, kernels of wisdom are now taken as Shakespeare's own wise pronouncements on living a proper life.

Ah, the beauty of having hundreds of years of thought upon a statement.

Someone asked me to today how one goes about loving their enemies. I said just do it and begin with any in the mirror.

Enemies are very real. I have a ton of people in politics who sometimes post here that dislike me to the point that they will post only to troll or mock or insult or claiming to want to teach me things about myself lol but only after they trash me in 3-4 different directions and character attributes. No matter what you do to them and how many chances for reset you offer them they will continue to be nasty and angry and ready for insults and friction.

Such people are insecure and malicious psychopaths. It's the easiest thing in the world to disagree with someone and do it with confidence and honor and desire to help them see with kindness why your ideas are better. If your ideas are better all you need is more examples of why they are better and to ask the other person to defend their different ideas after providing arguments that undermine them logically, hopefully using positions the other side accepts as true or will recognize with help as such when kindly provided with third sources/evidence. But its important to do that without the desire to destroy the other side as if this is a contest who will shame the other and score victories. Honest people that want to improve a discussion do not chase each other, they simply try to direct the group towards a more proper position for both or demand in opposition the other side to be better, suggesting that they are not convincing, offering arguments why they are not as successful as the discussion deserves.

And yet all this very easy approach is missing. Instead we have to kill each other. Well lets kill each other then and see what happens when there is no more dialogue and all left is cursed eternal enemies that will live only to fight or people who just ignore the others as if they do not matter.

Enemies? Of course there are enemies. Most people are first enemies of their own selves and enemies of the opportunity for a better community.

And yet it still remains the easiest thing to extend your hand in friendship to others without the least losing your dignity, honor or belief in your positions.

Males don't, on average, reach social-emotional adulthood until approximately 25 years of age. Some never do.
