That by becoming a group you give the predator a variable size and direction target that is not really a true target as it is emergent and changing and not real at the detail level of the predator's own size where the target collapses to individuals. The predator sees the emergent target not the thousand small ones anymore. So it cant focus on one and if it does it probably quickly loses it by the group interfering. Cooperation increases survival. Game theory in action.

The scattering probability if you tried to attack the group in a straight dive path to its perceived center is probably tiny also and it collapses by the time you are there as they spread in all directions opening a void where the blind rage path was taking the predator.

Probably he/she just needs more time and patience and its a numbers game of repeated efforts. At some point some bird will be alone or move alone out of the group or falcon wont lose focus in a dive. We need to observe for a few hours to see what happens.

Just to see my point over something so seemingly unimportant even; We had a rather interesting nature related educational talk (on starlings and their migration and social patterns of behavior and their predators like falcons) because of a scene spanktehbadwookie shared over this weekend from his home (and there is nothing negative about his posts in SMP by the way to deserve banning). None of these matters to the politics people of course. We will just lose another person here. Just because they dont like what they have going there from some people who dare to protest the very negative hostile aggressive style of the community and of course tolerate 100x more terrible things that undermine concepts of free speech by others. One less person to cause a constructive exchange of posts here. But lets allow happily all those that say nasty things about other people instead of debating their ideas and who throw insults, troll and overall generate perverse unkind behavior left and right. Oysters and Beer; Beer and Oysters - I love both. And just visited this place in Portland, Oregon. Five gooey oyster stars for this place. I got a half-dozen sampler of different oysters from Washington and Oregon. Washed down with a local pale ale. Yummy!
