Laphroaig is really smokey - like smoked bacon. If you are really new to this, you may not like it.

When I discovered single malt scotch I went on a sampler of brands. Macallan is a good reliable scotch, because of its mellowness.

Lagavulin is what I order when I want to celebrate. It is as good as others that are older and more expensive.

Single malt scotch got me to understand something . Most of the pleasures of food are all in the nose.

Oban is the brand I have on hand at all times - in case of emergencies - which happen quite often (like right now for instance).

Once you have had 100,000 drams you're entitled to this:

Ardbeg Supernova 2010
70cl / 60.1%
Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling
This is the 2010 version of Ardbeg Supernova, and no doubt will be hoping to follow on from the success of last year's edition, which scooped Scotch Whisky of the Year from Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2010. Maximum 3 bottles per customer.

Funnily enough, when I was still living in Germany, my favorite Whisky was a cheap supermarket one, called Glen Grant. Doesn't exist in Australia, though. Australia is a terrible country for Whisky, fwiw. Even a simple bottle of Laphroaig costs ~70$.

Glen Grant isn't a particularly cheap whisky. Did you mean William Grants?

No, I mean Glen Grant. Was around 11-12 Euro, which makes it something like (maybe) 18 $. I meant "cheap" compared to higher class brands.

Interesting. It was ~5 years ago and I am pretty sure of the price - I used to work in that supermarket.

A mystery about the price but its a decent whisky so no mystery about why you liked it so much.

I used to love Glen Grant as a solid workhorse single malt but it was discontinued in the UK around ten years ago (but even then was not what I would call cheap). Just being relaunched after being bought by Campari in 2006 so will have to get a bottle and see how it is doing.

It's Sunday you maggots and look what you are doing - posting drivel about math, IQ's, the destiny of the Universe, QM, ethics, capitalist religion, and other rot. Stop being daffy and realize that the joke known as the Universe is best enjoyed as a party. See, for example - The Pogues:

I was accepted into a mathematics Ph.D program today. I start in August. I was on pins and needles waiting to hear back from the schools.

Can you explain that to me? I never understood the American system. In Australia and Europe you see an advertisement that someone is looking for a PhD student. Then you apply for the position basically the same way as you would apply for a job.

You apply to the schools you would like to go to. They look at your application, letters of recommendation, grades, publications (if any) and how many people they can accept that year and make a decision.

So you have to take classes to get a PhD? What about original research?

You do both.

The distinction that I've been told is that the university system is more advanced in Europe and thus, more material is covered in the undergraduate system (this stems from better HS classes too). Typically there is a year or two of classes and a PhD thesis of original research.

Where'd you get into?

Sometimes I think that I should've went into a Math Ph.D.

I'm glad that North Cal. finally had Mello Yello shipments. It makes vodka Mello Yellos cheaper.

There are times when I consider maturing and trying some more "sophisticated" drinks, such as scotch. Input?

I'm going to UC Denver.

I believe I'm required to take 45 hours of courses, though I'm not sure if that is for a student who doesn't have an MS yet. I already have a master's degree. In addition to that I'll write a dissertation which means original research.
